EUROPA - Press Releases - How is Europe doing in clean technologies? Visit the new Commission's online assessment system

  • Today, the Commission launches "SETIS", the online Strategic Energy Technologies (SET-Plan) Information System, which provides the latest research results on the status, forecasts and R&D investment figures for low-carbon technologies. It underpins the effective strategic planning, conception and implementation of EU energy technology policy and serves notably to the implementation of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan). SETIS assesses and monitors those technologies that have a significant potential to help Europe meet its energy and climate change targets, such as wind power, solar power, CCS or bioenergy. The Information System offers interactive tools to compare the maximum potential and energy production costs foreseen for the different technologies over time.

Research

  • We examine the potential economic implications of
    using vehicle batteries to store grid electricity generated at off-peak
    hours for off-vehicle use during peak hours. Hourly electricity prices in
    three U.S. cities were used to arrive at daily profit values, while the
    economic losses associated with battery degradation were calculated based
    on data collected from A123 Systems LiFePO4/Graphite cells tested under
    combined driving and off-vehicle electricity utilization. For a 16 kWh
    vehicle battery pack, the maximum annual profit with perfect market
    information and no battery degradation cost ranged from ~$140 to $250 in
    the three cities. If the measured battery degradation is applied, however,
    the maximum annual profit (if battery pack replacement costs fall to
    $5,000 for a 16 kWh battery) decreases to ~$10-$120. It appears unlikely
    that these profits alone will provide sufficient incentive to the vehicle
    owner to use the battery pack for electricity storage and later
    off-vehicle use. We also estimate grid net social welfare benefits from
    avoiding the construction and use of peaking generators that may accrue to
    the owner, finding that these are similar in magnitude to the energy
    arbitrage profit.

Benefits of System Loss Reduction « HEAD, WIND, CANOE

    • Aside from impacting or not impacting electricity rates, system loss reduction has the following benefits:


      • Reduction of fuel emissions due to lesser use of fossil-fuel generating plants - this has societal impact as it cover environmental concerns.
      • Utility system capacity savings - decrease in losses provides released extra capacity for the distribution lines and transformers.
      • Promotion of Energy Efficiency - it will be noted that the Distribution Utility (DU) is an energy-efficient electric company as it tries to decrease its system loss.
      • Improvement of system voltage profile - the utility is regulated to supplying a range of voltage level and reduction of losses will produce a marginal system voltage quality that may be acceptable. This will also provide good power quality at the convenience outlets of consumers allowing their electric equipment/appliances to operate without mis-operation or loss of life.

Germany's Solar Cell Promotion: Dark Clouds on the Horizon | Leonardo ENERGY

  • This article demonstrates that the large feed-in tariffs currently guaranteed for solar electricity in Germany constitute a subsidization regime that, if extended to 2020, threatens to reach a level comparable to that of German hard coal production, a notoriously outstanding example of misguided political intervention. Yet, as a consequence of the coexistence of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) and theEUEmissions Trading Scheme (ETS), the increased use of renewable energy technologies does not imply any additional emission reductions beyond those already achieved by ETS alone. Similarly disappointing is the net employment balance, which is likely to be negative if one takes into account the opportunity cost of this form of solar photovoltaic support. Along the lines of the International Energy Agency (IEA 2007:77), we therefore recommend the immediate and drastic reduction of the magnitude of the feed-in tariffs granted for solar-based electricity. Ultimately, producing electricity on this basis is among the most expensive greenhouse gas abatement options.

Flat Panel Technology Boosts Solar Efficiency

  • Xtreme Energetics has investigated the possibility of using mechanical trackers to perform the same light-focusing duties as other solar array manufacturers have. However, HP’s transparent transistor can do the job electronically, rather than mechanically, and significantly reduce the costs of such an installation. Such a solar array is known as a concentrating photovoltaic (or CPV) solar array. To date, CPV arrays are fairly expensive and cannot store energy, making them less useful. They also work best in specific sections of the world — those with the highest levels of solar radiation, such as the southwest United States and northern Africa.

Research

  • The price of delivered electricity will rise if generators have to pay for
    carbon dioxide emissions through an implicit or explicit mechanism. There
    are two main effects that a substantial price on CO2 emissions would have
    in the short run (before the generation fleet changes significantly).
    First, consumers would react to increased price by buying less, described
    by their price elasticity of demand. Second, a price on CO2 emissions
    would change the order in which existing generators are economically
    dispatched, depending on their carbon dioxide emissions and marginal fuel
    prices. Both the price increase and dispatch changes depend on the mix of
    generation technologies and fuels in the region available for dispatch,
    although the consumer response to higher prices is the dominant effect. We
    estimate that the instantaneous imposition of a price of $35 per metric
    ton on CO2 emissions would lead to a 10% reduction in CO2 emissions in PJM
    and MISO at a price elasticity of -0.1. Reductions in ERCOT would be about
    one-third as large. Thus, a price on CO2 emissions that has been shown in
    earlier work to stimulate investment in new generation technology also
    provides significant CO2 reductions before new technology is deployed at
    large scale.
