As China's Rare Earth R&D Becomes Ever More Rarefied, Others Tremble -- Stone 325 (5946): 1336 -- Science

  • China was late to join the race to develop novel rare earth materials, elements that are essential constituents of everything from iPods to Patriot missiles. But Western observers agree that China is catching up fast in areas such as fuel cells and magnetic refrigeration. Today, about three-quarters of the world's neodymium magnets are made in China. Domestic industrial demand is rising: Last year, China consumed 60% of all processed rare earths. That unnerves some industry analysts and U.S. legislators, who have expressed concern about China's dominance of the rare earth supply. Last year, China satisfied 95% of global demand—now about 125,000 tons per year—and holds more than half of all proven reserves. In 2005, prices started creeping up when China began to limit production and slap export tariffs on some rare earths. In a policy paper last month, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology floated the idea of prohibiting export of three scarcer rare earths: europium, terbium, and dysprosium. If the Chinese government were to implement such a policy, it would be a big problem for other countries.

The work presented here is intended to fill this gap by bringing the research on fossil-based and renewable energy economic studies together and identifying the potential drivers behind both energy demand and supply to provide a complete picture of China’s energy situation in the new millennium. This will be of interest to anyone concerned with the development of China’s economy in general and the energy economy, in particular.

Suntech Achieves World Record Conversion Efficiency for a Multi-Crystalline Module

  • WUXI, China, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd.
    (NYSE: STP), the world's leading manufacturer of photovoltaic (PV) modules,
    today announced that it has achieved a new world record conversion efficiency
    of 15.6% on a commercial grade multi-crystalline silicon PV module. This
    conversion efficiency surpasses the previous record of 15.5% (aperture area
    only) set by Sandia National Labs 15 years ago. The multi-crystalline module
    conversion efficiency was independently tested by Fraunhofer Institute for
    Solar Energy Systems ISE in Germany.
