U.S. Transmission Planners Eye Britain's 'One-Stop Shop' for Siting - NYTimes.com
-
Moving aggressively to solve a problem that vexes U.S. energy planners, Great Britain has centralized control over the siting of transmission lines and other facilities needed to expand renewable energy and curb greenhouse gas emissions.
Consultations - Planning, building and the environment - Communities and Local Government
-
Public consultations are an essential part of policy development. They provide the Department with necessary feedback on proposals for legislative change or other new initiatives, thus informing the Government's decision making process.
Healey: Building momentum for homes of the future | webnewswire.com
-
The proposals launched today outline how those emissions can be reduced both on and off site, including through community scale low carbon heat production for district networks.
-
Non-domestic buildings often have greater potential for onsite renewables (e.g. more roof space) and to play a critical role in the viability of community heat or energy networks.

MIT Has Thermeleon Roof Tiles
-
It's no small matter. In fact, Chu says that turning all the world's roofs white would eliminate as much greenhouse gas emissions in 20 years as the whole world produces in a year. But some critics point out that in northern cities, the gain in summer could be outweighed by the loss in winter. The ideal situation, then, would be to get the advantage of white roofs when it's hot and black roofs when it's cold.
Now, there may be a way to have both. A team of recent MIT graduates has developed roof tiles that change color based on the temperature. The tiles become white when it's hot, allowing them to reflect away most of the sun's heat. When it's cold they turn black and absorb heat just when it's needed.

EUROPA - Press Releases - Questions and Answers on the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan)
-
Today the European Commission has adopted a
proposal for a European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (see IP/07/1750).
Energy technology will be a key element of Europe's plans to reduce its
greenhouse gas emissions and move towards a low-carbon future. But there are
structural weaknesses in the current energy research system (see MEMO/07/469
– Why Europe needs a Strategic Energy Plan). The SET-plan (see MEMO/07/493
for details) should help the European Union position itself to develop the
technologies it needs to meet its political objectives and at the same time
ensure its companies can benefit from the opportunities of a new approach to
energy.

3 Questions for 3 Energy Storage Experts
-
Energy storage provides the key to these innovations and will be the cornerstone of the economy that will emerge around the next generation of energy. Here are three questions for three experts — Rick Luebbe, CEO, EnerG2; Jill Watz, senior adviser, Vulcan Capital; and Ahmad Pesaran, principal engineer, National Renewable Energy Laboratory — that have spent years digging into the technologies, the chemistries, the economics, and the future hurdles for the deployment of energy storage.

Comment: Better management not less information - V3.co.uk - formerly vnunet.com

What that amounts to is that 10 minutes can't go by without something chiming
or flashing in a bid for my attention. The problem becomes trying to filter
these between what is time sensitive and what can wait, but in most cases that
is impossible to do without stopping what you are busy doing and checking the
message first.

IEEEXplore# Losses minimisation of a field-oriented controlled induction machine by flux optimisation accounting for magnetic saturation
-
In this work, the minimisation of the total copper losses in an induction
motor has been achieved by optimising the flux
level as a function of the motor torque. The
changes in motor parameters depending on flux
level are taken into account. Three losses minimisation methods are presented
and compared both by simulation and experiments. Results obtained from an
appropriate benchmark show that the input machine power can be decreased by 15%
when using such optimisation
Drive keeps motor working at maximum efficiency: News from Mitsubishi Electric Automation Systems
-
Mitsubishi's new F500 series is a development of the highly successful A540 drive and uses Flux Optimisation technology to ensure the motor is working at its maximum efficiency the whole time
