From the 1850s onwards, against a background of great new wealth in society and a working class that was more independent and resourceful, the 'problem of democracy' became urgent for the rich and powerful.
One year ago, a revolution began in Egypt that ultimately brought down the U.S.-backed dictator Hosni Mubarak after 30 years in power. Following on the heels of the Tunisian revolution, Egypt's struggle provided a ray of hope for millions of people around the world.
Catalyst is the quarterly freesheet of the Solidarity Federation.
An Introduction to Solidarity Networks Adapted from SeaSol’s ‘Why you should start a solidarity network’
"The Communist Party of Cuba's VI Congress has just closed with an endorsement of the liberal reforms (“to each according to his labors”) promised in the realm of the economy: but along with these come cuts in social services and an increased presence for military and for technocrats in the machinery of government, with a reduction in the presence of intellectuals and workers."
"Without government or state, how does political autonomy work in the Zapatista zone? How do the people organize to get things done, like realizing a water system for the community?"
-
In Roberto Arenas, like all Zapatista villages, the community assembly—with representatives from each household—meets in the community hall, weekly—or more frequently if there are things to decide. Together they determine the manner and method of developing their own village, taking into account what resources are available. Decisions are made by the assembly, preferably by consensus. If there is a split and no clear decision, the debates and discussions go on until the assembly reaches a consensus. Occasionally, this can take days on end. This is participatory democracy in action, warts and all.
How can one small Brooklyn-based co-op help create an economy founded on teamwork, social justice, and democracy?
On 15thMay 2011, around 150,000 people took to the streets in 60 Spanish towns and cities to demand “Real Democracy Now
Finally the spirit of revolt has come back to the Spanish state, after to years of weak resistance against the crisis and the decision of the two main unions, CCOO and UGT, to sign a social deal last january which stoped the dynamics of mobilisation they had begun with the general strike of 29 september
Greece is at a critical turning point, and many critical changes are taking place in a societal as well as a political and economic level.
Charity is the act of those that have more than they need giving to those that have less than they need. Their hearts bleed for you all the while they make it known that they are the better people and one such as yourself should be forever thankful.
-
The rich folks believe that it is their God given right to exploit the world and all who live upon it for their personal wealth. And that the bad people of the world are those that seek to change that arrangement.
-
There is something out there that the rich folks fear. They fear it more than an enemies army or even the wrath of their God. That such dreadful horror of the rich is solidarity of the exploited and oppressed. While plundering the earth and robbing the people to amass their great wealth, the capitalist class has also wielded epic effort historically to keep working people divided and fighting among themselves. They know that if working people stood together in solidarity, their way of life would end.

The Free Palestine Alliance and Addameer are calling for days of action during the week of April 11 – 17 in support of Palestinian Political Prisoners.
Seven years ago today, Rachel Corrie was crushed to death by a Caterpillar D9R Israeli bulldozer while nonviolently protesting the demolition of Palestinian homes in Rafah, Gaza Strip, along with other members of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM). Now her parents, sister and brother are suing the State of Israel and the defense minister, claiming wrongful death.
-
The suit's objective, according to Rachel's mother, Cindy, "is to illustrate the need for accountability for thousands of lives lost, or indelibly injured, by [Israel's] occupation.... We hope the trial will bring attention to the assault on nonviolent human rights activists (Palestinian, Israeli and international) and we hope it will underscore the fact that so many Palestinian families, harmed as deeply as ours or more, cannot access Israeli courts."
-
As Corrie's civil suit is being heard in a Haifa court, Simone Bitton's movie Rachel is being shown at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque.

The family of American activist Rachel Corrie, who was killed by an Israeli army bulldozer in Gaza seven years ago, is to bring a civil suit over her death against the Israeli defense ministry.
-
The case, which begins on March 10 in Haifa, northern Israel, is seen by her parents as an opportunity to put on public record the events that led to their daughter's death in March 2003. Four key witnesses – three Britons and an American – who were at the scene in Rafah when Corrie was killed will give evidence, according to the family lawyer, Hussein Abu Hussein.
-
The four were all with the International Solidarity Movement, the activist group to which Corrie belonged. They have since been denied entry to Israel, and the group's offices in Ramallah have been raided several times in recent weeks by the Israeli military.

"This spring a flotilla of six to ten boats will again sail to Gaza. Of these, five have been funded by IHH from Turkey, and a third, a cargo ship, has been funded by donations from the people of Malaysia."
-
The ships will carry reconstruction material essential to the rebuilding of Gaza yet forbidden to them by the Israelis.

Three leaders and founders of the Free Gaza Movement were recently honored by the San Jose Peace and Justice Center. Greta Berlin, Paul Larudee and Kathy Sheets were each given a Gertrude Welch Peace and Justice Award.
"Desmond Tutu, former Archbishop of Cape Town and prominent leader of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa recently wrote: “I’ve been very deeply distressed in my visit to the Holy Land; it reminded me so much of what happened to us black people in South Africa. I have seen the humiliation of the Palestinians at checkpoints and roadblocks, suffering like us when young white police officers prevented us from moving about.”"
-
Where South African apartheid limited black Africans’ movement through humiliating “pass laws” which regulated where blacks were allowed to live, work and travel, Israeli apartheid constrains Palestinian freedoms through an extensive network of armed checkpoints and roadblocks which criss-cross Palestinian towns and villages.
-
Where South African apartheid terrorised the black population through States of Emergency which allowed the state to detain anyone without a hearing for up to six months (and while in prison they would be tortured and often killed), Israeli apartheid is currently holding around 7,500 Palestinians in prisons, often without trial, often for years at a time and often employing torture to cow and brutalise.

"Israel is facing a global campaign of delegitimization, according to a report by the Reut Institute, made available to the cabinet on Thursday. The Tel Aviv-based security and socioeconomic think tank called on ministers to treat the matter as a strategic threat. "
-
The report cites anti-Israel demonstrations on campuses, protests when Israeli athletes compete abroad, moves in Europe to boycott Israeli products, and threats of arrest warrants for Israeli leaders visiting London.
-
Reut says the campaign is the work of a worldwide network of private individuals and organizations. They have no hierarchy or overall commander, but work together based on a joint ideology - portraying Israel as a pariah state and denying its right to exist.
