  • He warned left and progressive people that "[r]idiculing the tea party shenanigans is a serious error."
  • Chomsky was off-base in implying the tea party is a working-class phenomenon. It's true that, as he said, there is a "class" resentment among the tea party movement, and the context is the devastating economic crisis and wealth gap that exists in the United States. Undoubtedly there are working-class people among the tea partiers. But the working class does not make up the majority of this movement. Nor does this movement represent working-class interests.

The fate of a bill passed by the University of California at Berkeley Student Senate (ASUC) to divest from two U.S. firms providing military support to Israel's occupation of Palestine will likely be decided at an April 14 Senate meeting.

  • The bill says the ASUC will make sure its assets "do not include holdings in General Electric and United Technologies because of their military support of the occupation of the Palestinian territories," and will urge the UC Regents to do the same regarding the university's holdings.
  • The measure, which passed, 16-4, in the wee hours of March 17, was subsequently vetoed by ASUC President Will Smelko, who was not at the meeting.

A yearlong debate on health care reform centered on costs and on methods for extending insurance coverage. Lobbying, congressional posturing, and media focus on deal making were boundless. Missing was any notion of health care serving people rather than interests.

  • According to "Deadly Delivery, The Maternal Health Care Crisis in the USA," 101 pages long, the United States ranks 41st in maternal mortality. Between 1987 and 2006, the U.S. rate doubled, from 6.6 deaths per 100,000 births to 13.3 deaths. The Washington, D.C rate is 34.9; that for Black women in New York City, 83.6.
  • The rate of one in 47,600 Irish women dying during childbirth is the world's best. The comparable U. S. figure is one in 4,800. Of more than 536,000 maternal deaths worldwide in 2005, 99 percent occurred in poor countries. One Millennium Development Goal calls for a three-quarters reduction in the MMR between 1990 and 2015.

Writing in the March 11 Wall Street Journal, Steven J. Law, a bigwig lawyer for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, turns reality on its head by claiming working people and their unions were the BIG winners in the 5-4 Supreme Court "Citizens United" decision.

  • The big business group is calling for draconian, and probably unconstitutional, limits on workers' ability to collectively have an impact on politics, to elect people that they feel will represent their interests. The Chamber of Commerce proposed anti-worker, anti-union restrictions include: require secret ballot elections to approve political spending; prohibit public sector unions from participating in elections of politicians who "will oversee their labor contracts" and prohibit the government from allowing automatic union dues payments from employee paychecks.
  • The LA Times reports that the Chamber of Commerce is getting "record-setting amounts of money raised from corporations and wealth individuals."

Death squads appear to be operating freely in Honduras, in spite of claims by the United States and Honduran leaders that the election of President Porfirio "Pepe" Lobo of the conservative National Party on November 29 would produce peace and normality.

ORLANDO, Fla. - At a closed two-hour meeting of the AFL-CIO's executive council today, many of the nation's union leaders expressed anger and frustration with the Obama administration for what they say is its lack of bold action on job creation, health care and labor law reform, and for its support of the mass firings of teachers at a Rhode Island high school.
