*Must Read* report on Social Software

  • The report talks about the different types of software available in the market and key suppliers. Some of which are blog, social bookmarking, open-source social software etc sound are familiar. Although it also touches on software like social mining / intelligence,  HCM (Human Capital Management) social software and others which are relatively new.
  • It is almost impossible to predict which social software will get maximum hype going forward. I predict with the launch of OpenSocial and Facebook Connect - Social Data Portability will be the future of several social networks, followed by Social Mining (i.e. application of analytics to social content).

HCLS/Clinical Observations Interoperability

  • The goal of this task is to investigate, and if possible propose, a model that enable re-use of common observation models across the clinical trials and clinical practice contexts. This of course, include how Semantic Web specifications such as RDF/OWL can be leveraged to achieve this.

Technology News: Web 2.0: Data Portability: Carefully Chipping Away at the Garden Walls

  • Social-networking sites have embraced the idea of data portability, but making that idea into a reality is a whole different game. Several projects and initiatives exist whose goals are to bridge the chasms between social sites while protecting the user's privacy, writes J. Trent Adams, founder of Matchmine.

Some Web Firms Say They Track Behavior Without Explicit Consent - washingtonpost.com

  • Several Internet and broadband companies have acknowledged using targeted-advertising technology without explicitly informing customers, according to letters released yesterday by the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
  • "Increasingly, there are no limits technologically as to what a company can do in terms of collecting information . . . and then selling it as a commodity to other providers," said committee member Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), who created the Privacy Caucus 12 years ago. "Our responsibility is to make sure that we create a law that, regardless of the technology, includes a set of legal guarantees that consumers have with respect to their information."

Portable Taste Data - OpenTaste - Duke Listens!

  • There are a number of attempts to create a representation for portable taste data. There's the Attention Profile Markup Language (APML), there's the Matchkey. Now there's one more - OpenTaste. OpenTaste an open standard for making your online persona portable. OpenTaste profiles allow you to capture your preferences, store them online, and share them --- or not --- with OpenTaste-enabled websites. Technically speaking OpenTaste is a open protocol standard based on OAuth and OpenID that enables the markup of preference semantics in RDF/XML, XML, and HTML with microformats. In some ways you can look at OpenTaste as APML with semantics. The XML version of OpenTaste even uses APML syntax to represent explicit and implicit attention, but then layers analysis models for attention and preferences, along with semantic relationships to ensure that the concepts are clear and unambiguous.

In describing the state of the data portability movement, Alex Blum, CEO of KickApps, said, “we now have a situation where major Web players are vying to be the cloud—to provide the underlying technology for social graph data.”

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--> Blum duly noted that the idea scares both publishers and audiences, but Parity CEO Paul Trevithick, for one, doesn’t seem to think the Big Brother pretensions of the likes of Google are a foregone conclusion. “The point is architectural,” he said. “Facebook would say it should be us (that should be the gatekeeper of users’ data), but data goes in and doesn’t come out.” Instead, he said that, “people, themselves, as sovereign entities, should have the control.”

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]-->This is the idea behind data portability: that users control their own data, and that that data is portable; i.e. it exists in many places without belonging to any of those places. As such, Trevithick said data portability would help bring about an Internet of the future where you don’t have to repeat yourself, because your data would exist in cloud that’s accessible whenever and wherever you go online.

  • This is the kind of solution we are working on at SwitchBook. At the VRM Workshop 2008, I was excited to learn more about MatchMine from J Trent Adams; they are moving in a similar direction for media-based recommendations. There is currently no service we know of that fully delivers on the promise of User-driven Search, but I’m looking forward to working with Trent and others to develop the open standards and protocols to make it possible.

EKIVE - Thoughts and Ideas as Web 2.0 meets the Enterprise: VRM retrospective - making adoption easy

    • What are the elements of a VRM data portability policy?

The basic elements of a VRM data portability policy should include:

      • Data retention agreement - How long will my data be retained for? For example - for the life of the relationship plus 30 days.
      • Data reuse agreement - Will my data be used for purposes beyond the original transaction
      • Data ownership agreement - What elements of the data belong to the vendor such as a Frequent Flyer number
      • Data portability agreement - The data that is the subject of the agreement may be stored by the vendor, or it may be held by a data custodian in a Personal Data Store.
      • Data access agreement - The data that is the subject, or a sub-set, of the agreement should be accessible to third parties that have been granted access by the user. For example, granting access to my shipping address information at Amazon by a third party vendor I have performed a transaction with.

Technology Review: Who Owns Your Friends?

  • Chris Saad, cofounder and chair of the nonprofit DataPortability
Project, notes that many current methods of transferring data expose users to
huge security risks. For example, it's a common practice for social sites to
ask users to submit the usernames and passwords for their Web-based e-mail
accounts when they first sign up; an automated service can then search the
network for people listed in their address books. "The door is open right now
for any application that scrapes your Gmail address book to go ahead and scrape
your shopping cart as well, or scrape your searches, or keep your username and
password and pretend to be you," says Saad. "It's a nightmare of security, and
it's something we need to solve sooner rather than later."
