I'm learning more about Women's Empowerment and in particular what I'm wondering is: Why human trafficking is important to Mexico? I was researching this question online, and this blog post caught my attention because it explains the efforts that Mexico is displaying towards the issue. It tells why Mexico is concerning the issue as well.
"Traffickers seek out vulnerable victims and coerce them into situations of exploitation. One such example is Maria (not her real name), an 8-year old girl who was forcibly removed from her home in Guatemala by a child trafficking ring and taken to a brothel in Cancún two years ago. Maria is now staying in a shelter for victims of human trafficking in Mexico City."
The quote I chose here is basically saying, what intent human traffickers have when they do so, by giving an example of a girl who was a victim of Human Trafficking and what efforts they have made to reassure her safety.
I think this is important because it gives an example of the what the campaign for anti-human trafficking wishes to do. It makes me wonder if this will influence other countries to follow suit.
I am learning more about food security right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: Why is this such a surprise to me? It seems like I should know about this as a resident of Queens. I was researching this question online, and this news item caught my attention because this is extremely shocking. I knew that we were in a recession, and that New York City's economy was suffering, but I was unaware that our food source was insecure. I found it devastating that government efforts weren't mentioned in the article and am going to assume that there is none.
"The number of emergency meals provided to the city's hungry has jumped in every borough since 2006, with the Queens tally topped only by that in the Bronx, which saw a 110% boost. In Brooklyn the jump was 75% and in Manhattan 62%. The smallest increase was 29% for Staten Island."
Basically what this quote is saying is that New York City's percentage of needed emergency meals has jumped up 75%.
I think this is terrible because I am aware that the government is using money on things that seem to me less important. It makes me wonder why this is even occurring in the first place.
I'm learning about Food Security right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: If agriculture is such a huge part of African society and has such a great impact on their prosperity, why is it neglected? I was researching this question online, and this article caught my attention because it was in regards to food security.
" For the past generation, agriculture has been neglected both by African leaders and by the International community as a development tool "
The quote I chose here is basically saying the African Government and the International community neglect African agriculture as a priority regarding development.
I think this is wrong because it makes me wonder why such an important part of African society and prosperity would be neglected. I can't seem to understand why something as important as a food source has lesser value than education or trade.

For the past generation, agriculture has been neglected both by African leaders and by the international community as a development tool.
This video was devastating. It showed a man in comfort of what is portrayed as chaos. The repeatedly spoke of needing recreation supplies, not military security, nor authority. I think military occupation of troops in Haiti when it is clearly not needed is an excuse for means of aggression and war crimes. Foreign aid is still a trickle... why? If hundreds of thousands of troops can be sent to Haiti without effort why cant it be the same with goods and supplies. I think who ever is in control of the major major Haiti earthquake relief programs should try to avoid any U.S. involvement. All

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake centred approximately 25 kilometres (16 mi) from Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, which struck at 16:53:09 local time (21:53:09 UTC) on Tuesday, 12 January 2010.[6] The earthquake occurred at a depth of 13 kilometres (8.1 mi). The United States Geological Survey recorded a series of aftershocks, fourteen of them between magnitudes 5.0 and 5.9.[7] The International Red Cross has stated that as many as 3 million people have been affected by the quake,[8] with as many as 100,000 deaths likely, according to the prime minister.[9]

Most of Port-au-Prince's major landmarks were significantly damaged or destroyed in the earthquake, including the Presidential Palace (though the President survived), the National Assembly building, the Port-au-Prince Cathedral, and the main jail.[10][11][12] All hospitals were destroyed or so badly damaged that they have been abandoned.[13] The United Nations reported that headquarters of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), located in the capital, collapsed and that a large number of UN personnel were unaccounted for.[14] The Mission's Chief, Hédi Annabi, was confirmed dead on 13 January by President René Préval.[15]

The Arecibo message is a digital message sent to globular star cluster M13, and is a well-known symbol of human attempts to contact extraterrestrials.-
JosephT EWSIS on 2009-12-11I wonder if this is real because it doesn't say wether it is or not in the caption, it looks like it is from a cartoon.

JosephT EWSIS on 2009-12-10This is important because it lets the reader know where possible extraterrestrial life may exist, and overall is a very informative statement.

Add Sticky NoteAll other proposals, including beliefs that some UFOs are of extraterrestrial origin (see extraterrestrial hypothesis) and claims of alien abduction, are considered hypothetical by most scientists. UFO sightings are sightings of unidentified flying objects that may or may not be connected with extraterrestrial intelligent life. Most of these sightings can be dismissed as sightings of Earth based aircraft or known astronomical objects, or perpetration of hoaxes. Some sightings have remained unexplained, in some cases having been reported by trained professionals.
-
JosephT EWSIS on 2009-12-10Let me explain this. First this part if the article says that some proposals regarding UFO's and being abducted by Aliens are rather hypothetical.
Second this part of the article states what a UFO is. It says that a UFO is an unidentified flying object, that may or may not be connected with extraterrestrial intellegent life.
Third it states that most UFO's have been proven to be man made aircraft, but some are unexplained, though the possibilites are scarce, these may have connections with Extraterrestrialism.

I'm learning more about extraterrestrial life right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: Is there life on Mars, or in space at all? I was researching this question online, and this news item caught my attention because It discusses the search, and research processes of extraterrestrial hunts.
"The search for evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence, commonly known by the acronym SETI, began at 3 P.M. today with simultaneous commands to computers and radio receivers here at the world's largest radiotelescope and at another big telescope in the Mojave Desert in California."
The quote I chose here is basically saying that the search for extraterrestrial life has began.
I think this is surprising because I already know that scientists had already began the "extraterrestrial hunt" but I never or hardly ever hear anything about their progression. After all the hoaxes, the little information dished out about Area 51, I don't know what to believe. I think this issues paranoia and conspiracy among me and countless other people. It really makes me wonder... nothing. It reinforces my stance on trust in the government.
I'm learning more about extraterrestrial life right now, and in particular I'm wondering about is: Is there life on Mars, or in space at all? I was researching this question online and this news item caught my attention because It discusses the Vatican's approach on researching Extraterrestrial life. The Vatican is a major congregation of the Catholic church in Rome.
''Both science and religion posit life as a special outcome of a vast and mostly inhospitable universe,'' he told a news conference Tuesday. ''There is a rich middle ground for dialogue between the practitioners of astrobiology and those who seek to understand the meaning of our existence in a biological universe.''
The quote I chose here is basically saying that a common stance is met between scientists that want to research Extraterrestrial-ism and rather more religious people that want to research it.
I think this is shocking because... It makes me wonder why would the Vatican of all things want to seek information about Alien Life. I would assume that the Vatican, would oppose any beliefs that life exists outside of earth. The article also mentions that it was appropriate that the Vatican would host such a meeting, this honestly makes me a little paranoid.

I'm learning more about "Life on Mars" right now, and in particular what I'm wondering about is: Is there life on Mars? I was researching this question online, and this blog caught my attention because It said that there is a possibility that bacteria could live on Mars. I thought this discovery was ground breaking, and I thought that nothing could live on Mars.
"The question of whether life in the form of bacteria (or something even more exotic!) exists on Mars is hotly debated, and still requires a resolute yes or no. Experiments done right here on Earth that simulate the conditions on Mars and their effects on terrestrial bacteria show that it is entirely possible for certain strains of bacteria to weather the harsh environment of Mars."
The quote I chose here is basically saying certain bacteria may be able to survive on Mars, but this is only inferred after a series of experiments, conducted on Earth.
I think this is interesting because it makes me wonder if Humans will ever be able to live on Mars, or if anything does exist there, or if anything exists even outside of earth.
I first read this and thought, "wow!" this is really amazing. I continued reading and found out that it was not completely true. All of these experiments were conducted on earth, but the test(s) simulated to be like the terrain on Mars. I began wondering why don't they just attempt to place the bacteria, I am sure on less person wouldn't affect the population that badly. I know that is a bit harsh but I don't care.
