Unemployment and Learning
-
Far from being an aberration, this kind of industry-specific structural unemployment is a natural consequence of a world where economic structures can shift very fast, and we need to address it as such.

Devastating "Free Market" Reforms Imposed on Serbia
-
The economy of Serbia was at one time predominantly based on two forms of public enterprises: socially-owned firms that were worker managed, and larger state-owned companies. The last remaining firms in the former category are scheduled to be completely eliminated by the end of this year, while the latter category will take longer to tackle.

US wages and salaries rise at record-low levels

The fall in consumer spending, the largest since December, is in part the result of the end of the government’s cash-for-clunkers program on August 24. Economists have said that this program, among others, accounts for much of the increase in third-quarter consumer spending and GDP.
German election to usher in government of austerity and confrontation
-
A government coalition between the CDU/CSU and the FDP is the preferred choice of the business federations. Not only would the FDP guarantee its interests, the FDP in government would also strengthen the pro-business wing of the Union, which has repeatedly accused Chancellor Angela Merkel of being too conciliatory on social issues.

There will be no more talk of the promises made in the “so-called election campaign.” Instead the agenda will be dominated by “a €152 billion shortfall in revenue, €320 billion in new debts, huge deficits in social insurance, 90,000 jobs endangered in the auto industry, 180,000 jobs at risk in the financial sector, from 4 to 5 million unemployed altogether.”

America Out of Work: Is Double-Digit Unemployment Here to Stay? -- Printout -- TIME
-
The number of long-term unemployed, people who have been out of work for more than 27 weeks, was the highest since the BLS began recording the number in 1948. Jobless figures released Sept. 4 showed a 9.7% unemployment rate, pushing the U.S. — unthinkably — ahead of Europe, with 9.5%.

The global jobs crisis
-
“People 54 or younger are losing ground financially at an unprecedented rate in this recession,” the article reports. It notes that “household income for people in their peak earning years—between ages 45 and 54—plunged $7,700 to $64,349 from 2000 through 2008, after adjusting for inflation.” Only workers born before 1955 have seen even a marginal increase in their incomes since 2000.

“employment is the bottom line of the current crisis. We cannot claim victory because we see economic indicators going up. We should not assume that (gross domestic product ) growth will take care of this.”

Unemployment rises sharply across Europe
-
When short-time workers and non-registered unemployed are included in the jobless figure, the rate rises dramatically. In Germany, those officially counted as unemployed rose by 52,000 in June to total 3,460,000. When one includes the jobless who are not counted and the underemployed, the figures rises to nearly 6 million.
-
owever, a number of leading EU countries, in particular Germany and the Netherlands, have introduced extensive short-time working schemes that provide government assistance to firms that cut the work hours of their employees rather than laying them off. As a result, the official jobless figures underestimate even further the scale of social misery and poverty caused by the economic crisis.

Rejection of California budget sets stage for even larger spending cuts
-
The so-called “alternative” proposed by the Democrats was a slightly less severe program of $11 billion in budget cuts. The Democrats propose cutting $4.5 billion from K-12 education, $2.8 billion from higher education, and $2.6 billion from health and human services.

By abandoning the richest and most populous state to its own devices, the Obama administration has directly contributed to the crisis now unfolding. Trillions are handed out to private banks, but when it comes to the world’s eight largest economy on the verge of bankruptcy, no money is available.
As California collapses, executives at Goldman Sachs and other banks are anticipating record bonuses, returning to business as usual.
How France’s petty-bourgeois “left” betrays workers
-
The deal also contains a clause obliging the Clairoix unions to desist from solidarity action with workers from other Continental sites. The Courrier Picard explains that the agreement signifies that “Continental promises to abandon legal proceedings against those responsible for the material destruction of the factory entrance on April 21 in exchange for a joint trade union commitment not to destroy or block any Continental sites in France or abroad.”
-
In the spring of 2008, the two main French trade union confederations, the CGT and CFDT, signed the “Common Position” with Sarkozy and the Medef employers’ federation. In exchange for enhancing the legal and financial position of these two unions, the state obtained the passage of an extremely regressive law, deregulating worktime protections, slashing pensions, and ending the 35-hour workweek. The role of “far left” parties such as LO and the NPA was to promote fundamentally fraudulent “national days of action” protests by public sector workers, organized by the same trade unions that were formulating the social cuts.

Unemployed graduates in China to reach 3 million in 2009
-
In 1998, 3.4 million Chinese students attended university. By 2008, the figure had increased more than six-fold to 21.5 million.
-
When it ordered the university expansion in 1998, Beijing paid little toward the programs that ultimately cost nearly $US100 billion, forcing campuses to accumulate large debts and charge extortionate tuition fees. The policy of “user pays” was part of Beijing’s unleashing of market forces across the board, from the dismantling of state industry to the privatisation of urban housing and healthcare.

Joblessness soars in Spain | Not working | The Economist
-
In some ways Spain’s labour laws are quite flexible. With almost a third of the workforce on temporary contracts, marginal workers are easy to shed by the simple expedient of not renewing contracts. That explains why Spain accounts for over half the additional unemployment within the euro area in the past year.
