When I read popular science articles about other fields than physics, the ones that I appreciate most provide a review on a particular research direction. They tell me what the theories are that are being discussed today, what the evidence is, and what the current controversies are about. They tell me what is presently in the minds of the researchers who work in that field.

Slik er det ikke med regjeringskvartalet. Der har ikke journalistene noe sted å være og ingen mulighet til å treffe politikerne. De vet lite om hvordan departementene og regjeringen jobber, og det er ofte mange brannmurer (les: kommunikasjonsrådgivere) som må forseres før de får kontakt med politikerne. De har få kilder i embetsverket, både fordi de ikke har prøvd å bygge opp slike kilder, og fordi de aller fleste i embetsverket er veldig lojale overfor den politiske ledelsen.

I must first find out which scientists are most relevant, and have a sense of their opinions and place within the field. All of this takes time, which reporters often don't have.
