This refusal to relate isolate facts and fragmentary comment with the changing institutions of society makes it impossible to understand the structural realities which these facts might reveal; the longer-run trends of which they might be tokens. In brief, fact and idea are isolated, so the real questions are not even raised, analysis of the meanings of fact not even begun.
The end-of-ideology is a slogan of complacency, circulating among the prematurely middle-aged, centred in the present, and in the rich Western societies. In the final analysis, it also rests upon a disbelief in the shaping by men of their own futures — as history and as biography. It is a consensus of a few provincials about their own immediate and provincial situation.

- (2) So far as orienting theories of society and of history are concerned, the end-of-ideology stands for, and presumably stands upon, a fetishism of empiricism: more academically, upon a pretentious methodology used to state trivialities about unimportant social areas; more empirically, upon a naïve journalistic empiricism — which I have already characterised above — and upon a cultural gossip in which “answers” to the vital and pivotal issues are merely assumed. This political bias masquerades as epistemological excellence, and there are no orienting theories.
- The problem of agency is never posed as a problem to solve, as our problem. Instead there is talk of the need to be pragmatic, flexible, open.
- To be “Left” means to connect up cultural with political criticism, and both with demands and programmes. And it means all this inside every country of the world.
- They tell us, for example, that ordinary men can’t always be political “heroes.” Who said they could? But keep looking around you and why not search out the conditions of such heroism as men do and might display? They tell us we are too “impatient,” that our “pretentious” theories are not well enough grounded. That is true, but neither are they trivial; why don’t they get to work, refuting or grounding them? They tell us we “don’t really understand” Russia — and China — today. That is true; we don’t; neither do they; we are studying it. They tell us we are “ominous” in our formulations. That is true; we do have enough imagination to be frightened = and we don’t have to hide it: we are not afraid we'll panic. They tell us we “are grinding axes.” Of course we are: we do have, among other points of view, morally grounded ones; and we are aware of them. They tell us, in their wisdom, we don’t understand that The Struggle is Without End. True: we want to change its form, its focus, its object.
- Is anything more certain than that in 1970 — indeed this time next year — our situation will be quite different, and — the chances are high — decisively so? But of course, that isn’t saying much. The seeming collapse of our historic agencies of change ought to be taken as a problem, an issue, a trouble — in fact, as the political problem which we must into issue and trouble.

It is no wonder that voters have come to associate social democrats with the neoliberal policy of dismantling the communal frameworks of existential security, leaving individual men and women to manage their fates on their own, from their individual and mostly scarce and inadequate resources. There is now next to nothing to distinguish between the ‘left’ the ‘right’, in economic, or any other, policy.
Previously, the distinctive mark of social democracy was the belief that it is the duty of a community to protect all its members against the powerful forces that they are unable to resist as individuals.

seen an escalation of harassment and imprisonment for scholars who have
conducted research on Colombian society and politics and have published
material critical of the state.
Rather than issuing a statement to protect those
threatened or secure the university by sifting out the Águilas Negras
therein the state began an investigation of some 55 students throughout
various public universities thought to be associated with the FARC-EP.
Ironically, no investigation was administered concerning paramilitary
infiltration in these same institutions even though the Universidad
Nacional de Colombia has received over 312 threats from paramilitaries
(Colombia Reports, 2008b).

  of his peer-refereed publications raise questions about the
  classification of belligerent forces and armed ideologically led
  political movements being inappropriately categorized as terroristic it
  is highly disturbing that such critique is considered to be a
  revolutionary act.

Most interesting of all is the way in which Napolitano tries to have his cake and eat it, by on the one hand acknowledging, more or less, that unnamed people had sought to build up tensions so as to create the conditions for an authoritarian ‘turn’, but on the other waxing indignant about any suggestion that these people might have nobbled the judiciary.
there is a clear difference between using violent language and actually plotting murder, and this is a difference with important legal consequences.

- Indeed, in some ways, autonomia presaged later social movements which emphasized how society could be changed through reshaping individuals’ consumption habits and ways of associating with each other, rather than state takeover (as such, of course, it shared some of the weaknesses of these movements as well as the strengths).

The politics of establishing open spaces were meant as explicit statements confronting a capitalist (and in the East: an authoritarian communist) society whose very structure, purpose and operating mode were broadly considered to "alienate humans", to take control of and to modify their basic human needs and relationships.
Hackerspaces today function differently than they initially did. When the first hackerspaces were formed there were always clear distinctions (an "antagonism") between "us" (the people resisting) and "them" (the people controlling). Certain people did not want to live and toil within the classical bourgeois working scheme and refused to be part of its ideological and political project for some pretty good reasons.
