With unemployment continuing to increase due to the global economic downturn, some Scottish colleges have reported a rise in applications of 300 percent this year.

- The introduction of tuition fees would place a further crippling burden on those entering higher education, with a forecast from the National Union of Students (NUS) indicating that charging £7,000 in fees would leave the average student in £32,000 worth of debt at the end of his or her studies.

Erfaringene fra Danmark, som innførte en tilsvarende ordning i 2006, har gitt studieavgifter på over 100 000 norske kroner.
- Regjeringen har ikke lovet at pengene de sparer på avgiften vil komme universitetene til gode. Universitetene vil trolig tape studenter. Dermed vil de mangle avgiftsinntekter for å demme opp for kuttet i bevilgninger. I tillegg er det flere masterstudier, særlig i tekniske fag, som vi vet er truet fordi de nesten utelukkende studeres av utenlandsstudenter.
