Applying SKOS Concept Schemes

  • The problem with OWL is that it is a more complicated technology than many people can handle, at least initially. New tools and books are emerging to help lower the bar to OWL modeling, but there remains a need to satisfy the requirements for traditional knowledge management schemes and workers. This article introduces the kinds of data that has been produced so far and how the Simple Knowledge Organization System (SKOS) helps support lightweight but still relatively formal concept schemes.

Metadata Research Center <MRC> | Helping Interdisciplinary Vocabulary Engineering (HIVE)

  • HIVE is an automatic metadata generation approach that dynamically integrates discipline specific controlled vocabularies encoded with the Simple Knowledge Organisation Systems (SKOS), a World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standard. HIVE will assist content creators and information professionals with subject cataloging and will provide a solution to the traditional controlled vocabulary problems of cost, interoperability, and usability.

ISKO UK - International Society for Knowledge Organization

  • This event, the third in ISKO UK's KOnnecting KOmmunities series, was an opportunity to learn more about SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System), the up-and-coming standard for publishing controlled vocabularies on the Web.

The topic proved to be enormously popular. There were 94 people present coming from government, publishing and broadcasting agencies, public service organisations, commercial companies and academia. Reassuringly many practitioners were present including subject matter experts, librarians, information architects, software developers etc.

We were fortunate in having speakers from the forefront of SKOS development and implementation who were able to draw a general picture of the role of knowledge organization systems in the Semantic Web development but also guide us through the intricate details of what it means to express controlled vocabularies in such a way so that they their semantics can be exploited in information integration and discovery.

int.ere.st: Social Tagging, Bookmarking, and Sharing for SCOT ontology - Mozilla Firefox

  • The main objective of int.ere.st is to demonstrate how Semantic Web and Web 2.0 technologies can be combined to provide better metadata creating and sharing support across online communities using tag data.
We think it is a good starting point to build tag mediated society based on Semantic Web technologies.
The resources of the site is fully based on RDF vocabularies, in particular SIOC, FOAF, and SCOT.
