Simple Home File Server (Based On Ubuntu) | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

The server is built with Ubuntu Server 7.10 & Samba. Do not use Ubuntu Server 5.04 LTS because this version does not support the latest SATA Controllers (in an Pentium II or III you likely want to use a PCI SATA RAID controller to attach SATA hard disks).

file server ubuntu

  • The existing tutorials do not describe how to add additional disks or have a
complex authorization or access procedure. Freenas (www.freenas.org) does have too many
features for home users and more important it does not support the NTFS
    format.

HOWTO: Make google talk voice calls - Ubuntu Forums

  • This post will show you how to install a program on ubuntu which can actually make voice calls to other google talk users. Unfortunately, it's not in a stable version yet so we will have to compile the source. This is a development branch of the psi jabber client, being called psi-jingle.

Mac On Stuff: How to run Windows XP under Ubuntu Dapper

  • then to boot just make a shortcut to:
    qemu -boot c -hda winxp.img -m 256 -localtime
Notice the "c" not makes us boot from the winxp.img file, not the cdrom, as I've left off the -cdrom option here this PC now has no access to the CD drive.

problems with radrails - Ubuntu Forums

  • At last, I get radrails working like a charm!

    My procedure:

1 - Install ruby with synaptic

2 - Download rubygems and unpack it.

3 - Open a terminal, go to the rubygems directory and type "sudo ruby setup.rb"

4.- Again, in terminal, type "gem install rails --include-dependencies"

5.- Download radrails and unpack it

6.- Execute radrails. At this moment, If a new project is created, the skeleton is created as well. Only there is a problem... the webbrick don't start!

7.- Go to the ruby path on the preferences and change it to the correct path (the default, at least in ubuntu dapper, is incorrect) "/etc/bin/ruby"

8.- Try to start the webbrick server and now it works... I hope

How to: Broadcom Wireless cards - Ubuntu Forums

  • It seems that if you get the following string back: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02) that this guide is VERY unlikly to work for you although it does sometimes, dont ask me why, but basically every "no" vote and "this didnt work for me" post comes from a BCM4318 user....

Java Technology Forums - JNI under Linux

  • I've just written a native library myself and found that the trick is to ensure that the envirnment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH has been set correctly *before* my java program is invoked.

In addition; if you are loading a native library from within Tomcat, you must ensure that LD_LIBRARY_PATH has been set *before* you start Tomcat.

Oh, and by the way: Do not forget to "export" LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Here is a sample:

    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/path/to/my/directory

If your .so file also includes other .so files, I think you need to use the "-rpath" option when linking, i.e:

ld -shared -soname=libmylib.so -rpath /path/to/other/libraries objectfiles

RadRails setup really this painful? help... [Archive] - Ubuntu Forums

  • 0) installed ubuntu, and ruby and rails..

    1) then i installed sun java and set it to be default

    2) then i installed eclipse with synaptic, but it was still using gcj java to run and still sooooo slow so i did this:

    3) apt-get remove --purge java-gcj-compat

    and also i did this:

    4) echo JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/j2re1.5-sun > ~/.eclipse/eclipserc

now finally ecliipse was using the sun java and a little peppier.

but then when i went into add the radrails plugins, it complained about a feature.xml missing? so then i did this:

    5) sudo ln -s /usr/lib/eclipse/features/org.eclipse.rcp.source_3.1.1 /usr/lib/eclipse/features/org.eclipse.rcp_3.1.1

Ubuntu Java — ImageJ Documentation

  • Additionally, you can export the Java classpath in your .bashrc:

    export PATH=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/bin:$PATH

making sure that your 'JAVA_HOME' is set to the proper folder in your .bashrc:

    export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun

Or make an alias in your .bashrc for 'java':

    alias java='/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun/bin/java'

(Based on Albert Cardona's email to the mailing list.)

  • By default Ubuntu runs GCJ, the GNU Java, instead of Sun's Java.

The 'easiest' way to enable Sun's Java is to run it from your launcher. For example:

Setting JAVA_HOME after using java-package - Ubuntu Forums

  • JAVA_HOME="PATH_TO _YOUR_JAVA_INSTALLATION"

    export JAVA_HOME

now all you need to do is logout and login again.

  • $ echo $JAVA_HOME
