Paul Allen believes a tipping-point is near in brain research

  • When we first put the mouse-brain atlas online free, it was met by the research world with suspicion. People wondered what the catch was. Scientific research has long been a solitary endeavour—one researcher, one microscope. Findings are protected so that discovery credit can be clearly defined and awarded. This is a successful model and will continue to be.

However, the Human Genome Project demonstrated a different path: multiple teams working collaboratively towards a common goal. I believe a real acceleration in progress and innovation comes from the open sharing of ideas and collaboration. We wanted the mouse atlas to be free and available for all to use as the basis for foundational research and discovery.

  • Clearly the model of providing a freely accessible database is a successful one. In a sense, we have challenged other researchers to offer greater access to their findings. Will they take the challenge? My bet is that over the next 18 months we are going to see more open access and more collaboration.

Clustering - Introduction

  • So, the goal of clustering is to
determine the intrinsic grouping in a set of unlabeled data. But how to decide
what constitutes a good clustering? It can be shown that there is no absolute
“best” criterion which would be independent of the final aim of the clustering.
Consequently, it is the user which must supply this criterion, in such a way
that the result of the clustering will suit their needs.

Flash memory data recovery and protection | Tech Hints

  • The flash memory-based USB key has become commonplace faster than just about any
other computer peripheral in recent memory. It was only three years ago that a
32 or 64MB USB flash memory key was a rare and interesting item that would
easily set you back a couple of hundred dollars.
  • It may surprise you to know that FAT-16 is the exact same file system that has been used on floppy disks since time immemorial. No wonder the average PC finds it easy to read and write from flash devices... Once the USB drivers have done their work, it's essentially just a big floppy disk.

Data Mining 101: Finding Subversives with Amazon Wishlists | Applefritter

  • "Data mining" of all that information and communication is at the heart of the furor over the recent disclosure of government snooping. "U.S. President George W. Bush and his aides have said his executive order allowing eavesdropping without warrants was limited to monitoring international phone and e-mail communications linked to people with connections to al-Qaeda. What has not been acknowledged, according to the Times, is that NSA technicians combed large amounts of phone and Internet traffic seeking patterns pointing to terrorism suspects.
  • the wiretaps can be shifted over to a different 1 percent until the target is found, or until everyone's phone line has been checked for subversive traffic. The FBI said they need this capacity to plan for the future. This plan sparked such outrage that it was defeated in Congress. But the mere fact that the FBI even asked for these broad powers is revealing of their agenda."
