  • Is this the start of a move by more and more sites to support SPDY?

Is there any reason not to support it?

  • Aside of the lacking availability of stable servers, another issue is that SPDY runs over SSL exclusively. That means that due to XP's lack of support of SNI, it's still not possible to do name-based virtual hosting.

Wasting an ip address for smaller sites is not always opportune or even possible, especially as we are running out of IP addresses.

  • Many web pages are full of small icons and script references. The speed of those transfers is limited by network delay instead of bandwidth. SPDY ramps up the parallelism which in turn removes the serialized delays experienced by HTTP/1 and the end result is faster page load time. By using fewer connections, SPDY also saves the time and CPU needed to establish those connections.

  • Initially, SPDY was a proprietary Google protocol implemented only in Google’s Chrome browser. That’s changing, however. Amazon’s Silk browser includes SPDY support, and Firefox 11 will include preliminary SPDY support. Partially motivated by SPDY’s uptake, the IETF’s HTTPbis Working Group — the team of industry experts tasked with maintaining and developing the HTTP specification — is considering the development of a new specification, HTTP/2.0, with the goal of improving the performance of HTTP connections. The working group will solicit suggestions from the industry, and with two, soon to be three implementations already, SPDY is likely to be well placed among those suggestions.
