DynamoDB is a “a fully managed NoSQL database” that can be scaled up or down according to demand. Amazon takes care of all the provisioning and management of the database. The whole service takes advantage of solid-state drives, greatly speeding up the transfer of data from the database (which is often a bottleneck).

Schema-free document databases are in many ways a more natural fit for Web applications than the traditional RDBMS. With interfaces that are natural and convenient for rapid development, and a lack of object-relational mappers and other heavy middleware, applications can be both simpler and more powerful.

In the late nineties and early thousands, websites were mostly read-only--a publisher would create some content and users would consume that content. The data access patterns for these types of applications became very well-understood, and as a result many tools were created and much research and development was done to further develop these technologies.

Jon Travis has already started a project for testing out Project Voldemort. It is called vpork. This is a step in the right direction. As a community we should come together and start talking about how we test performance because it is important. We owe it to our users and we owe it to ourselves to be honest about the capabilities of our projects. Only through our commitment to quality, even at a cost to our own egos, will we build great systems.
