  • Advertising for apps within the App Store, even on the new iAd for Developers platform, is likely ineffective for driving sales.

From August 19 through August 25 I ran a campaign on the newly released iAd for Developers platform for our Audiobooks Premium app. The results were, to say the least, disappointing. For all the promise of selling your apps directly within an advertisement, it appears that so far this is not a viable way to drive traffic and create an economically sustainable promotion. For $1,251.75, my campaign generated a total of 84 downloads, thus a Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) of ~$15. For a $0.99 app, those economics just can’t work out.

  • The goal is to find an economically viable way to introduce our apps to new customers, who might not find them through the typical Top Charts within the App Store.

  • Bigger ads that feel more ‘natural’ than on smaller-size screens, in other words, which undoubtedly means more revenue from in-app display advertising, not to mention an almost certain increase of in-app purchases in most cases.
  • During the latest Apple earnings call, the company made it clear that they did not step into the mobile advertising game as an afterthought, and that they want developers to make money off their apps through advertising with a network they own and control, too.

Meaning, Apple will not let Google / AdMob and third-party mobile advertising players run the show. Owning Quattro, Apple has picked up another moneymaker from the App Store goldrush it has itself unleased, and the iPad will only reinforce that situation.

  • Our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price.
  • Geeks are getting pissed off because this isn’t a real computer/doesn’t run OS X/doesn’t have XYZ/is a glorified iPod touch. This is because geeks know nothing about advertising, which is another way of saying they don’t know how people work

  • The patent application lays claim to the methods and software "in which an indication of a telephone call being placed from a calling number is received, and a determination is made of an audio advertisement to play based on the calling number."
  • After the first month of the program it would be extremely interesting to see how many partial ads will be served, the cost difference between a first place and second placement ad, and even how the company deals with multiple-language advertising.

  • Kwanzoo, a new startup launching today, is looking to help increase your advertising revenue by embedding your ads in small quizzes. The site features a bank of over 50,000 questions spanning categories that include video games, sports, and movies. Users can try out the questions at the site’s homepage, but CEO Mani Iyer says that the company’s primary goal is to create interactive ad units. The startup has already established partnerships with large clients including Meebo and Glam Media, who are reportedly seeing click through rates as high as 10x what they normally see from typical banner ads.

  • First, they create a lot of fake blogs. There are slimy companies that make easy to use software to do  this for you. They scrape bits and pieces of legitimate blogs and repost them,  as if they were just another link blog. It is very hard to tell the difference  between a fake blog and a real blog until you read it for a while and realize  there's no human brain behind it, like one of those Jack Format radio  stations that fired all their DJs, or maybe FEMA.
  • When I activate my AdSense campaign, not much more than 5 minutes go by before they are all over it.. Multiple clicks from the same Internet IP's in Malaysia, Poland, Hongkong etc. (I tried to exclude certain countries in my AdSense account, but they seem to go through proxies, so its not much use).. - Joel Liu on 2005-10-24
