"This guide is meant to get you going with a new Ubuntu Linux desktop system that is configured for maximum usability for a new user.. This guide is not designed to be used with other Ubuntu guides. Everything here is based on more than a decade of Linux desktop use and the setup and support of hundreds of Linux desktop systems.." What an excellent guide :-)

"..Xgamma is a software application installed on all Ubuntu systems that can be used to change the gamma settings. This is another way of setting the black level.. ICC profiles are designated by an .icc or .icm file extension. In order for a device to have access to the information contained in the profiles, you have to get an appropriate profile or create one and then save it in the correct directory on your computer’s hard drive.. Lprof (Little Color Management System Profiler) is an application that can be used to set up color profiles for the Ubuntu desktop.. For setting a monitor profile select the Monitor Profiler tab. For most, select the button to "build a coarse profile." This option lets you select from a number of predefined profiles or to define your own.. Once you have a profile, you'll have to load it so that the video card will use it. Xcalib is a utility that will load the color profile.." :-)

"Many linux users who have integrated VIA graphics suffer from lack of 3D acceleration.. Developers came up with at least 3 drivers: via-, unichrome- and openchrome-, none of them worked though.. This guide will help you enable 3D if via-, unichrome- or openchrome- drivers do not work with your VIA graphics chipset.."

"Display-channel lookup tables | There are two approaches to loading display channel LUTs:
1. Create a profile that does not modify video card LUTs and thus does not require LUTs be loaded later on. Ideally, this approach would rely on DDC-capable monitors.. Unfortunately, monitors capable of making these adjustments through DDC are not common.. For mainstream monitors, a couple of options exist. BasICColor software, which works with most colorimeters on the market, allows one to adjust display output via the monitor interface.. By doing this, one can create a profile that does not require video card LUT adjustments..
2. Use an LUT loader to actually load the LUT adjustments contained within the profile prepared during calibration. According to the documentation, these loaders do not modify the video card LUT by itself, but achieve the same type of adjustment by modifying the X server gamma ramp.. There are two LUT loaders available for Linux: Xcalib is one such loader, and although it is a command-line utility, it is quite easy to use. dispwin is a part of Argyll CMS.."

"There are computer displays out there without any OSD buttons. No, really.. Collection of protocols to make such application is called Display Data Channel(DDC). On Linux PC you really have only one option, Ddccontrol application and its GUI variant named Gddcontrol.. Just to mention that this ddccontrol isn’t maintained since 2006 or so. Very unfortunate situation, but for now it works just fine but only with root privileges.. Gddccontrol can talk to your graphics adapter in two ways. First way is directly and you need to be root to do that. Second more attractive way is trough i2c-dev kernel..
sudo apt-get install gddccontrol libi2c-dev
sudo adduser username i2c
sudo /bin/sh -c 'echo i2c-dev >> /etc/modules'
Now restart your PC. After it boots, you can run Gddcontrol without being root (without gksu), and you can add Gddcontrol applet to your panel. Default Gddcontrol launcher uses gksu to launch Gddcontrol with root privileges. You should change this launcher by removing gksu from the launch command field in menu editor..":?/

"..I just installed and ran chkrootkit v0.47-1 on my CentOS 5.3 system, and the following is the output.. So, you can see that I have an entry at the end like yours - which is xorg (the X-Windows server) listening for remote desktop connection requests, which is OK because I set it up for that. I see some hidden library files that I need to check out, however.. in the gdmsetup window, you have a tab "Remote". Click on that. It should be set to "Remote login disabled". If it does, then you are ok. If not, set it to that. and press the "Close" button.." chkrootkit: USEFUL

"..This is CRAP! I'm sorry to say it, but Canonical Partners is trying to out-Microsoft Microsoft when it comes to hiding stuff so as to protect us from ourselves. I started using X and appreciating the advantages of X back when Linux was at version 1.x.x, back in the 1990s. Unix, and by extension, Unix-derived OSes such as Linux are very powerful, and if you take reasonable care, very secure. I came to appreciate many of these advantages, and so I'm still using a Unix-based OS today for all my work, 17 years later. Now it seems we're being fed a lot of pablum and treated like children.." Yes. I'm back to Debian -- Ubuntu now takes away more than it gives.

"My system has been running fine for quite some time and then more recently it has become sluggish.. I took a look at the processes running and realized that gvfsd-metadata is hogging 100% cpu cycles and nearly 60% of memory.. It looks like your metadata store is got corrupted, leading to an infinite loop in the code. The fix here is to remove the metadata storage, located in: ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata. I now believe that this could well have come about after the machine completely ran out of disk space one night whilst downloading.. The code to issue the fix is as follows:
rm -rf ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata ..Don't forget to check your hard disk space using df -h and free some if necessary.. following your instructions i did:
rm -rf ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata
pkill gvfsd-metadata
And everything went back to normal.. I was attempting to move about 50,000 text files from an external disk to a folder on the internal disk. When trying to do this... nautilus became sluggish.. Your solution seemed to fix the problem.." :-D hey!
