Guidelines for Educators Using Social Networking Sites - Home - Doug Johnson's Blue Skunk Blog
Social networks are rapidly growing in popularity and use by all ages in society. The most popular social networks are web-based, commercial, and not purposely designed for educational use. They include sites like Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, and Xanga. For individuals, social networking sites provide tremendous potential opportunities for staying in touch with friends and family.
Other educational networking sites are also growing in use. These sites are usually restricted to only certain users and not available to the general public. These include resources such as Moodle, educational wikis, a professional online communities such as the Classroom2.0 Ning, or district adoptions of online applications such as Google Apps for Education.
Report and Recommendations on Web 2.0 and Social Software [Federal Knowledge Management Working Group (KMWG)]
The recent and dramatic growth of Web 2.0 and social software fundamentally changes the way that organizations must interact with information, and with those who produce, analyze, and consume that information. Government is no exception. The landscape of wikis, blogs, video sharing, and other social media has evolved and grown so rapidly that government policy has not kept up. The power of Web 2.0 and social software, if properly managed, can have a tremendously positive effect on the way the government interacts with the public, interacts with its employees, and conducts its own business.
Understanding the New Web Era - Web 3.0, Linked Data, Semantic Web - NYTimes.com
The series aimed to tie together 3 big trends, all based around structured data: 1) the still nascent "Web 3.0" concept, 2) the relatively new kid on the structured Web block, Linked Data, and 3) the long-running saga that is the Semantic Web. Greg's series is probably the best explanation I've read all year about the way these trends are converging.

The Semantic Web in Education
The mantra of the information age has been “The more information the better!” But what happens when we search the web and get so much information that we can’t sort through it, let alone evaluate it? Enter the semantic web, or Web 3.0. Among other things, the semantic web makes information more meaningful to people by making it more understandable to machines.
Why We Like Diigo - School Computing
We all use the web to research information, but until recently this meant saving copies of web pages as files or printing them out as you visit them in order to collect, save, highlight, or annotate each one. A new web browser tool has made it possible to do all of this electronically. I'm now able to mark up web pages as easily as if I were using a yellow highlighter and a red pen. When I return to those web pages my annotations are still there, and I can also choose to see others' annotations. I no longer need to copy and paste between web pages and Word to take notes, and to keep track of what came from where. This process is all digitally facilitated with the Diigo social bookmarking and annotating tool. This tool has shifted the way I read the world wide web to be much more active. Diigo (http://www.diigo.com) keeps track of my annotations and categorizes the sites based on the tags I specify. This ability to interact with websites in the same way I use a paper textbook means that I can highlight passages, "dog-ear" important pages, and scribble in the margins. I can do all of this individually or collaboratively with others.
Five Technologies Tim O'Reilly Says Point Past Web 2.0 - ReadWriteWeb
Tim O'Reilly, co-founder of the Web 2.0 Conference, gave a short address on the 5th anniversary of that event at tonight's Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco and offered some thoughts on what's going to come next. He discussed five applications that he believes point the way.
Two themes stood out: sensors will surpass humans in front of their keyboards as the primary data source on the web and Moore's Law will need to be applied to humanity's greatest problems.

Integrating Information Literacy for the 21st Century: Reaching Out to Faculty and Students by Adopting Web 2.0 Principles | EDUCAUSE CONNECT
It is often assumed that technically sophisticated students are proficient in information competencies through their use of the Internet and popular search engines. However, course assignments frequently reflect problems such as plagiarism and inaccuracy in evaluating credible sources. Most faculty welcome support to promote information literacy skills but are often pressed for time; they don't want to be constrained in how they teach and would prefer to customize course resources. Participants will learn about UCF's institutional approach to addressing information literacy for the 21st century, which adopts principles inherent in Web 2.0 that most students and faculty have come to expect.
