Podcast334: One to One Learning with Open Source Netbooks is Practical, Affordable and Powerful – Learn Why » Moving at the Speed of Creativity

One to one learning with wireless, digital devices in the hands of every learner in the classroom is the future. With netbooks running over 100 free educational applications on Ubuntu Linux, that dream can be a reality in your classroom and school district today, not tomorrow. As I explain in the introduction to this podcast featuring two interviews, I have lost NONE of my enthusiasum for Apple and Macintosh computers, but I think it would be foolish to ignore the powerful and affordable computing and learning opportunities now offered by netbooks as well as open source software.

The Vertical Farm Project - Agriculture for the 21st Century and Beyond | www.verticalfarm.com

Vertical farms, many stories high, will be situated in the heart of the world's urban centers. They offer the promise of urban renewal, sustainable production of a safe and varied food supply, and year-round crop production. The concept of indoor farming is not new, since hothouse production of tomatoes, a wide variety of herbs, and other produce has been in vogue for some time. What is new is the urgent need to scale up this technology to accommodate another 3 billion people. An entirely new approach to indoor farming must be invented, employing cutting edge technologies. The Vertical Farm must be efficient (cheap to construct and safe to operate). Vertical farms, many stories high, will be situated in the heart of the world's urban centers. If successfully implemented, they offer the promise of urban renewal, sustainable production of a safe and varied food supply (year-round crop production), and the eventual repair of ecosystems that have been sacrificed for horizontal farming.

Scott McLeod discusses leadership with Technology Coordinators

Dr. Scott McLeod led a lively presentation at breakfast hosted by Learning.com at NECC in June 2009. He asked the question, "Why aren't you (the technology coordinator) having a bigger impact?"

"I really believe district-level technology coordinators are probably putting in more hours and have maybe a broader range of responsibilities than anybody else in this room. The people (tech coordinators) that I meet are very dedicated and hard working. They’re really trying their very best in doing a great job for their school in making everything run so smoothly,"

"Why do I hear so many complaints about you?"

What Does Internet Blocking Suggest to Students? | ISTE Connects - Educational Technology

...And as an educator who firmly believes in the right of free and universal access to information, it would be disgraceful to mark this year and not criticize the attempts by Chinese officials to write that ugly chapter out of the history of their country. Likewise it is disgraceful when developed countries celebrate the Chinese ascension as an economic power while casting a blind eye – or a knowing glance – in the direction of the Tiananmen dead

Empathy in the Time of Technology: How Storytelling is the Key to Empathy

Will the transhuman technologies that our accelerating future promises enable us to increase our empathy to others? Or will their use decrease our ability to understand ‘the other’ that exists outside our own selves, families, communities and cultures? As the world grows smaller and more connected, humans will grow ever more divergent because of their possession – or not – of a multitude of transhuman technologies, and so the role of empathy grows larger and more important than ever. In theory, sensory/media input stimulates mirror neurons, which enable empathy.Practically, empathy is created through storytelling, which is not only the most successful remote means of creating social empathy, but has actually been the engine of social/cultural liberalization and change. I will demonstrate both the positive and negative affects on empathy through the increasing reliance we have on transhuman media technologies and how I believe storytelling is the key to empathy creation.
