Yet another reason why Macs need security software | Security - CNET News

According to the X-Force 2008 Trend & Risk Report (PDF) released early this year, Mac OS X Server and Mac OS X top the list of operating systems with the most disclosed vulnerabilities for 2008. Each accounts for 14.3 percent, and has been in the top five in each of the last three years. Rounding out the top five were: Linux Kernel at 10.9 percent, Sun Solaris at 7.3 percent, and Microsoft Windows XP at 5.5 percent.

The purpose of this data is to compare the total number of disclosed vulnerabilities with each individual operating system. Vulnerability data is submitted to the Mitre Corp. and then appears in the CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) List.

Apple security: Myth or magic? -- Government Computer News

Ultimately, I was foiled by the security features of the Mac. I found that SSH attempted to log me in as the account owner of the Mac itself, rather than letting me to supply my own log-in name and associated password. In effect, I couldn't log on as anyone except the owner of the Mac account, at least by default. Because I didn't have an account on that Mac and my friend with the Mac didn't have an account on my Linux box, I couldn't log in.

Tor: anonymity online

Tor is a software project that helps you defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security. Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world: it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location. Tor works with many of your existing applications, including web browsers, instant messaging clients, remote login, and other applications based on the TCP protocol.

10 Privacy Settings Every Facebook User Should Know

Everyday I receive an email from somebody about how their account was hacked, how a friend tagged them in the photo and they want a way to avoid it, as well as a number of other complications related to their privacy on Facebook. Over the weekend one individual contacted me to let me know that he would be removing me as a friend from Facebook because he was “going to make a shift with my Facebook use - going to just mostly family stuff.”

Do you have an FBI file?

You might! Many people do. So let's talk about your past. Did you ...
... ever participate in a civil rights march? How about a Vietnam war protest?
... ever sign an edgy political petition?
... ever know a guy named "Joey the Horse?" (Ever help him take out any heavy garbage bags?)
... ever hang out with a third-world dictator, retired or present?

Save the Whales, or the U.S. Navy Sonar? (ABC)

National security and environmental law went head-to-head today at the Supreme Court when a government lawyer argued the U.S. Navy's use of sonar for antisubmarine-warfare training is critical for national defense, while environmentalists claimed the practice causes irreparable damage to marine mammals.

Ballmer needn’t fear the Mac…just yet | Irregular Enterprise

Boutique analyst firm Freeform Dynamics took a run at standardizing on Macs but the switch was not worthwhile. They’re now back in the Windows fold. Why You Should Turn Gmail s SSL Feature On Now

Let’s talk security and why you should take advantage of Gmail’s recent SSL feature, and why you might want to be careful using other non-SSL webmail services.

But first, make sure your connection is secured using SSL.
How do you know a connection is secured by SSL? The handy “s” after “http” will tell you. For example, https://mail.google.com is encrypted while http://mail.google.com is not. You can force an encryption by adding the “s” yourself, or by turning on “Always use https” from the Browser Connection settings of your Gmail account.

Making sure that lost iPhone doesn't get you burned

If you haven't implemented a mobile device policy, now is the time to start, according to an Info-Tech Research Group analyst.

With established devices such as RIM's BlackBerry already in rotation at most companies, and new handhelds like the Apple iPhone and Samsung Instinct on the way, IT departments must ensure employees using mobile devices are doing so in a safe and secure manner.

Mark Tauschek, senior research analyst at the Canada-based Info-Tech, said a well balanced acceptable use policy - with a strong focus on mobile device security - is essential to every major organization.
