Top News - iPods help ESL students achieve success
As school leaders ponder the implications of new technologies for their classrooms, one dedicated New Jersey educator has turned theory into practice, using the iPod to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) students.
During an International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) webinar titled "iPods as Teaching Tools for Language Learners," Grace Poli, media specialist at Jose Marti Middle School in Union City, N.J., and an Apple distinguished educator, discussed how the iPod is transforming learning in her school.
Apple Learning Interchange - Reading Fluency with iPods and GarageBand
The goal of this lesson is to develop stronger reading fluency and comprehension, and increase language acquisition skills:
Using an iPod and a voice recorder, students record themselves reading stories. The content is then cleaned up using GarageBand and redistributed to the students who use it to sound out words, hear how language is used fluidly, and gain a better understanding of the story.
Learning Styles
This chart helps you determine your learning style; read the word in the left column and then answer the questions in the successive three columns to see how you respond to each situation. Your answers may fall into all three columns, but one column will likely contain the most answers. The dominant column indicates your primary learning style.
Core Principles of Media Literacy Education - NAMLE - National Association for Media Literacy Education - Advancing Media Literacy Education in America
As the field of media literacy education has matured over the past 25 years, its focus has evolved from WHAT is taught to HOW we teach. The Core Principles of Media Literacy Education is a NAMLE project to expand the boundaries of the field and encompass the opportunities and possibilities of 21st century learning technologies to transform both learning and teaching.
Digital Storytelling
Storytelling is the original teaching tool. Long before there was formal schooling grandparents and parents there were stories. These stories provided children in the community with the knowledge base they needed to survive as an adult. With the introduction of the printing press and the the development of formal schools the role of storytelling in education was diminished. Yet, we still know how a powerful story can capture out attention, fire our imagination, and make clear a difficult idea or concept

pln2lead - Leadership 2.0 Home
What happens when you bring 6 educators and a video game developer together to discuss leadership for the future? Leadership 2.0. Leadership 2.0 is about modeling and facilitating best practices within administrative leadership for the purpose of supporting personalized learning for students, teachers, and fellow administrators. It moves past the status quo to push for reforms on multiple fronts, embracing the modern technologies today rather than relegating it to "the future" and tomorrow's leaders to implement.

educational-origami - home
Educational Origami is a blog , and a wiki, about the integration of ICT into the classroom, this is one of the largest challenges that I feel we as teachers face. Its about 21st Century Learning and 21st Century Teaching. Marc Prensky coined the now popular and famous phrase "Digital natives and digital immigrants" in his two papers by the same name. Ian Jukes talks about Digital Children.
The world is not as simple as saying teachers are digital immigrants and students digital natives. In fact people fit into both camps. We know that experience, like using a computer, will change the structure of our brain, This is a concept called Neuroplasticity. We also know that, the more intense the experience, the more profound the change. Our students, who often have a greater exposure to technology, are likely to be more neurologically adapted, but adults can as easily be "Digital Natives".
Libraries and commitment (Doug Johnson's Blue Skunk Blog)
Let's face it, a school where text books, classroom book collections, and the "term paper" as the only means of student communication don't need much of a library. A small popular book collection and a word-processing lab with access to Google may actually be all that such a school needs. If the librarian and technology staff are viewed as not having knowledge that is sufficiently relevant to implementing and teaching IL/IT skills, the book room can be staffed by clerks and the techs can keep the e-mail server and student information system up and running from a small hidden office until those applications are outsourced.
At the same time, if a school truly decides they want all their students to graduate having mastered a sophisticated set of IL/IT skills, having learned how to solve real problems creatively, and having experienced the power of global communications and collaboration, then a lack of resources - physical plant, equipment and human expertise will truly undercut this effort. Such an undertaking will require 1:1 laptop programs, well-stocked print collections, productivity labs, a fast and powerful network, good online materials, and, of course, a crackerjack professional staff to support both staff and students.
An Inconvenient Truth About Education: Rethinking the Way Things Are | Edutopia
Watching the Oscar-winning global-warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth, I was struck by the similarities between climate change and education change. These seemingly unrelated crises on our planet and in our schools are, in fact, connected.
Both have taken many decades to develop and, at least in the United States, both originated in an industrial economy built on manufacturing. The effects of global warming and school decline are difficult to detect year to year, but over several generations, their impacts accumulate -- and are now converging to limit the future health of our economy and our society.
To reverse these declines, similar fundamental shifts in thinking and behavior will be required at the individual, institutional, and societal levels. Consuming less, recycling more, and the ethic of caring for the environment should begin with our youngest children, as modeled by their parents, teachers, and caregivers. It's the same with literacy, curiosity, and a love of learning. Just as green technologies can make energy consumption more efficient, learning technologies can play a key role in modernizing the learning process.
