Dangerously Irrelevant: 'Some' is not a rebuttal
Some is not a reason to ignore the large-scale, widespread, policy- and practice-level decisions that need to be made to transition our schools into a digital, global society. Some is not permission to stand pat.

Nikon’s Coolpix P6000 point-and-shoot camera has a few odd tricks up its sleeve. Globetrotters will enjoy its built-in Global Positioning System sensor for geo-tagging — or adding geographical information to photos — and Luddites will love the camera’s built-in Ethernet port.

Open Thinking & Digital Pedagogy
My friend and colleague Marc (who really needs a blog) alerted me to this story regarding a recent legal ruling in the matter of the University of Ottawa and the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa (UPUO). The case arose when the U of O charged that Professor Denis Rancourt “had misrepresented his course in a detailed web posting, in such a way as to have described a dramatically different course not compatible with the official course description.” The 65-page ruling the case supported Dr. Rancourt’s actions as within the purview of academic freedom.

When will textbook publishers get a clue? (ZDNet)
Have you bought any textbooks recently? K-12 book prices are outlandish; college textbooks border on criminal and publishers are moving slower than molasses in January when it comes to moving towards any sort of electronic publishing model. I know, let’s cut down countless trees, print on them with toxic inks, and gouge the heck out of students when we could drastically cut costs and environmental impact by publishing books electronically! Good call.

As Travel Costs Rise, More Meetings Go Virtual - NYTimes.com
As travel costs rise and airlines cut service, companies large and small are rethinking the face-to-face meeting — and business travel as well. At the same time, the technology has matured to the point where it is often practical, affordable and more productive to move digital bits instead of bodies.

Digital Portfolios Made Easy
Digital Portfolios Made Easy is a portfolio system developed by Dr. Leigh E. Zeitz and Andrew E. Krumm. It provides a system for presenting digital portfolios that is complete but simple.
The growing interest in electronic and digital portfolios has created opportunities for practitioners to present portfolios that are more rich and interconnected than the traditional notebook professional portfolio. The greatest obstacle to creating digital portfolios, however, can be the practitioner's perception of the technology itself. The technology does not need to be overly complicated, and the goal of DPME is to make the process as transparent and intuitive as possible. The DPME templates provide a framework within which to build a standards-based, individualized professional portfolio. The DPME templates are provided in two formats, Word and HTML. These two formats allow practitioners of all skill levels to use software that most already have on their computers.

Now That Your Students Have Created Web-Based Digital Portfolios, How Do You Evaluate Them?
With the recent influx of new teaching and learning technologies, schools are implementing digital portfolios. The program at lona College developed a four-point rubric to evaluate web-based digital portfolios. A web-based portfolio, as used in this article, is a digital portfolio that incorporates web-based materials into teaching and learning. The three main elements evaluated were form (design and aesthetics), function and usability (ease of use), and components (presence and communication of the required samples). This rubric has allowed an objective, systematic, and reliable evaluation of...

NSBA: Evaluating Digital Products
We watched an example of a student-produced film about the bombing of Hiroshima and discussed how we would assess it. It was difficult to say since we weren’t the ones that gave the assignment, but it got the conversation started. Our speaker said that in many cases a scoring guide (i.e., rubric) isn’t even provided, or the scoring guide focuses exclusively on the mechanics of the product (e.g., number of images, number of PowerPoint slides). Too often, she says, the product is simply turned in without the kind of serious assessment that we usually give to more traditional writing assignments. I’ve observed this over the years as well, and have often felt like technological glitz has been substituted for high quality content. This is especially common with teachers who may not be very technosavvy themselves and may be more likely to be overly impressed with the polish that modern ditial tools can impart without any effort on the part of the student.

Student Product Scoring Guide
The Scoring Guide for Student Products was created to evaluate the content knowledge and the effective use of technology in communicating ideas and information that is evident in the products that students create with computers.
