About Google Wave
Google Wave is a new model for communication and collaboration on the web, coming later this year.
Libraries and commitment (Doug Johnson's Blue Skunk Blog)
Let's face it, a school where text books, classroom book collections, and the "term paper" as the only means of student communication don't need much of a library. A small popular book collection and a word-processing lab with access to Google may actually be all that such a school needs. If the librarian and technology staff are viewed as not having knowledge that is sufficiently relevant to implementing and teaching IL/IT skills, the book room can be staffed by clerks and the techs can keep the e-mail server and student information system up and running from a small hidden office until those applications are outsourced.
At the same time, if a school truly decides they want all their students to graduate having mastered a sophisticated set of IL/IT skills, having learned how to solve real problems creatively, and having experienced the power of global communications and collaboration, then a lack of resources - physical plant, equipment and human expertise will truly undercut this effort. Such an undertaking will require 1:1 laptop programs, well-stocked print collections, productivity labs, a fast and powerful network, good online materials, and, of course, a crackerjack professional staff to support both staff and students.
Content used to be king (learning in an online world)
There was a time when books, newspapers, magazines and journals were the prime source of content and information. It was always your move! navigating the authority maze, enjoying slow reading of (limited) information sources in order to gain a knowledge base that matched a particular curriculum outline.
This was when content was king and the teacher was the sage on the stage.
Now communication is the new curriculum, and content is but grist to the mill that churns new knowledge. Why? I came across a few good reads this week that set me thinking and wondering about the changes that we must support in our teaching and in our library services.
AlertNow
AlertNow, designed specifically to address school communication needs, supplements conventional school communications and replaces outdated phone trees and automated dialing tools that require staff resources and large blocks of time to deliver messages to multiple recipients. AlertNow is the industry's only rapid communication service that displays the school phone number on caller identification devices (Caller ID) for non-emergency calls and distinguishes urgent emergency calls with a "411" caller ID display.
Spread the Word (Robert Miller) | 21st Century Connections
Technology by its very nature will stop working at some point and this often creates an atmosphere of distrust. As the Director of Information and Communication Technologies I very often only hear the complaints and rarely a thank you. My staff works hard every day, which includes typical upgrades, day-to-day fixes, and emergencies. Decisions are made daily that impact how our teachers, staff, administrators, and students use the technology resources that are available in the schools. I think it is in our best interest to be proactive and share the good news and the challenges that are presented through the integration of technology throughout academic and organizational use throughout the school district.
Empowering middle schools through technology - Ideablob: where ideas grow
In ten years, modern education will have fully integrated new classroom media: video, online collaboration, and other web tools. We hope to pioneer a web tool that is a platform for this new media, bringing the power of the web to students, teachers, and parents in a secure, innovative environment.
Our idea is a response to problems in schools that we have identified through primary research and user involvement. The way students, parents and teachers interact and learn in middle schools has many opportunities for growth and improvement. Here is one example:Research shows that in the last ten years the way people obtain and digest information has changed, incorporating tools like the web. Unfortunately, the classroom environment has not kept pace with this aggressive expansion of technology as a social, educational and communication tool. We hope to provide the tools to solve this and other problems in the middle school context. Read more at AlightLearning.com
Moran students get a 21st century education (MyRecordJournal.com)
His dream is to have a laptop computer in the hands of every student. While he's not quite there yet, Paul Bogush has come very close using the resources at his disposal.
For Bogush, the use of technology has become the backbone of instruction. The Moran Middle School teacher was awarded a spot at the Google Teacher Academy last month, but was already immersed in the Web's free portals to engage his eighth grade class and prepare students to communicate in a digital world.

Instant-Messagers Really Are About Six Degrees from Kevin Bacon - washingtonpost.com
The "small world theory," embodied in the old saw that there are just "six degrees of separation" between any two strangers on Earth, has been largely corroborated by a massive study of electronic communication.
With records of 30 billion electronic conversations among 180 million people from around the world, researchers have concluded that any two people on average are distanced by just 6.6 degrees of separation, meaning that they could be linked by a string of seven or fewer acquaintances.
