Economy Down, PC Sales Up - Bits - Technology - New York Times Blog

In the U.S., the oft-touted “halo effect” from Apple’s iPods and iPhones looks to be encouraging consumers to try the company’s computers as well. Apple saw U.S. sales jump 38.1% in the quarter, according to Gartner (31.7% says IDC), pushing the company into third place, behind Dell and HP, with an 8.5% market share, compared to 6.4% last year.

State Agencies Bring K-12 Education Content to iTunes U : July 2008 : THE Journal

For more than a year now, Apple's iTunes U has served as a repository of educational multimedia content and resources. While these materials have always been accessible to K-12 educators, the focus of the content has been primarily on post-secondary education. But through a new initiative launched by several state education agencies, along with the State Education Technology Directors Association (SETDA), K-12 now has its own home within iTunes U.

Presentation Zen: Sir Ken Robinson: We need to transform education

I'm a big Ken Robinson fan and have pointed to him many times such as in this post on his TED talk from 2006 (and see Sir Ken's ideas on public speaking here). Even if you saw the TED talk, you will enjoy this 15-minute presentation (given sans slides, as is the Sir Ken Robinson style) that he delivered in April of this year to an international crowd of school superintendents at the Apple Education Leadership Summit in San Francisco.

Office 2008 vs. iWork vs. NeoOffice vs. OpenOffice

One man's opinion: The more I use these, the more I really don’t care for iWork. Sure, Keynote makes some darned pretty presentations, but NeoOffice (and OpenOffice for the matter) cuts the mustard quite handily. For real polish, you still can’t beat Office 2007/2008, as much as I hate to admit it. What do you think? Oo.org 3.0 looks to rock out loud too. Is iWork irrelevant, or is it just me? Reread the repost below and I’ll give this some more thought next week when I’m back from vacation.

Windows 95 was a remarkable moment in personal computing. Its successor has come.\n\nBut not from Microsoft. Apple has launched the defining platform of the early 21st century. The PC is dead—or will be. Long live the smart phone, er, iPhone.
