Going Negative by Jason Guriel : Poetry Magazine [article/magazine]

  • Maybe poetry is so marginal, so fragile a commodity, we worry about kicking it when it’s already pretty clearly down.
    • I think there is a lot of truth in this, and who wants to pursue poetry as a practice if there are no rewards. Part of me wants to "protect" poets; another part wants to let them sink or swim with all th other sharks we surround ourselves with (and posture as). - on 2009-12-03

  • approaching every new book with an open mind is as well-meaning but ultimately exhausting
    • This suggests a failing of (or at least lack of faith in) poetry presses. - on 2009-12-03

Learning with 'e's: The VLE sucks

"the Midlands event is entitled 'The VLE is undead' (Official tag for the event is: #VLEundead). Undead hmm? I can actually find myself concurring with this sentiment. Undead signifies a vampirical character to me, and insitutional VLEs do indeed tend to suck the lifeblood out of institutions, giving little back. This is an important issue folks. The future of education is at stake, and the puncture wounds are everywhere to be seen: Students who are disengaged or bored with homogenous, bland content that sits in the 'Learning Management System'. Disenchanted staff who pay lip service to a lumbering system that very few people really want to use, because either it is too time consuming to use effectively, too difficult to navigate or simply unfit for purpose.
