Test Center preview: Windows Azure Services Platform gives wings to .Net | InfoWorld | Review | 2008-12-15 | By Martin Heller
InfoWorld reviews Azure. Also note the impressive list of previous cloud computing reviews available for your perusal. The short-short is that Azure is impressive, with some features (such as workflow) that no other single destination provides.
What Microsoft Didn't Say About Windows Azure - Plug Into The Cloud - InformationWeek
A great breakdown of Azure and what can be read between the lines by the great John Foley. Plenty of vision, but little detail about how to get there, and when that would happen. Definitely worth watching the Azure situation closely over the next year to assure it moves into true "Enterprise" capabilities.
Bits or pieces?: How do you want your cloud?
An interesting thought from Simon Wardley about how the Azure thing could play out for those that buy into it. We all know lock-in is one of the attractive things about PaaS to service providers, but has Microsoft built critical mass before they've even begun?
Internet Evolution - IT Clan Editor's Blog - Microsoft's Azure: A Puff of Enterprise Cloud
Via Reuven Cohen: I think Mary Jander underestimates the effect that Azure will have on the near term market. With a heavy emphasis on hybrid clouds, this is going to drive enterprises exactly as Reuven describes it--private first, then push to cloud.
The Battle for Microsoft’s Soul
Steve Gillmore shows why he is considered one of the "hall of fame" bloggers, with a deep, rich analysmis of how the rollout of Azure was as much about selling the idea to entrenched internal M$FT interests as the general developer community. The vast majority of what he said here resonates with me. There has been a big effort by several groups within the company to acknowledge falling behind the times, and to leapfrog back to the front. This is a must read.
Scobleizer — Tech geek blogger » Blog Archive Never underestimate Microsoft’s ability to turn a corner «
Scoble sings the praises of Microsoft, which isn't much news in and of itself. However, the list of links here are an excellent resource, so I thought I would highlight it. Scoble's list of why Microsoft has an advantage is worth a perusal as well.
James Governor’s Monkchips » An industry analyst blog looking at software ecosystems and convergence
James ties together some interesting coverage of Azure (including a couple of my posts) and adds his thoughts about what Azure means to the "enterprise" cloud. I live the paragraph towards the end where he runs down the relative strengths of the various major players (or player-wanna-be's). I think he is absolutely correct.
Bits or pieces?: In the darkness bind them ...
Simon notes that Balmer has opened the door for some interesting partnerships in relation to Azure. So, does pushing this to the extreme open the door for Azure-on-AWS? Interesting question, but doesn't feel likely to me.
Appistry Adds Further Momentum to Enterprise Cloud Computing Shift | CloudAve
Is Appistry trying to play the role of "private Windows Azure"? Or is there a unique need for an alternative scalability architecture beyond what base .NET / .NET on Azure provides? I need to look into this further, but the Appistry guys are pretty good, so this is an announcement definitely worth noting.
Microsoft Office Is Coming To the Cloud - GigaOM
GigaOm details on the "Office in the Cloud" announcement. Pretty much "ho, hum" for me, but others are very excited.
Dell: Our Servers Will Power Windows Azure « Data Center Knowledge
And the winner is...the first systems company to publicly appear in a "major" cloud platform is Dell. I'm not seeing much publicity from IBM or HP. Are they also-rans at this point?
Windows Live Dev : Windows Live ID Becomes an OpenID Provider
Details about the Microsoft OpenID support. This I think was the one really distinctive part of the Microsoft announcement, and their support of OpenID solidifies its place in future authentication. But is it enough?...
Ozzie, Muglia, and Srivastava on Windows Azure: Video
This is the most facinating discussion to come out of PDC yet. All of the principles of the keynotes (save the Office guy) get together to discuss Azure, Microsoft's philosophy about competition on the web (sounds good), Live Mesh's relationship to Azure, the technology relationships between "on-premesis" and Azure, possible pricing models (with no numbers, unforunately, except "beginning price will be zero"), need for hybrid services, and why all the secrecy. Saddly it cuts out during an interesting observation from Ray, but I learned a lot from this. Recommended.
So just what is running on Windows Azure? | Beyond Binary - A blog by Ina Fried - CNET News
The CNET interveiw I refer to in my afternoon post today.
Microsoft PDC : Microsoft going Open with OpenID | Startup Meme
Microsoft to support OpenID. Between this and AppEngine, OpenID is quickly becoming a PaaS requirement. Perhaps even a SaaS requirement. There is a 3 minute webcast linked to from this post that describes it in more detail.
