Egyptian chronicles: Andrew Sullivan speaks about the USAID to Egypt
-
Sometimes I feel that we are taking an aid that we do not really deserve ,there are other people and countries in the world that in a desperate need for this aid , in fact the American people need this aid more than anyone with their terrible economy. Please do not look to me like a crazy person but I know what I am talking about , it is not about the Egyptian National pride many nationalists feel when they speak about the American threats or rather the American blackmail to cut the aid. I am speaking about a country full of resources more than you can imagine , I am speaking about brains full of potentials more than you can imagine.Believe me this is not romantic talk , this serious talk.
If you reclaim that area near the north coast and that area in the south near the borders as it should , you will not need to import wheat.
If you fight corruption in the regime and in the country as it should ,you will have enough money to have better education and better health care, in fact you can have surplus
One day this aid will stop ‘hopefully soon’ , we will be fine without it and we must be ready for this day.
If you think that this aid is a bribe to keep Egypt from attacking Israel , well technically we do not need this bribe because I am sure the Egyptian people prefer to build their country than to attack other countries , this is a myth and illusion I am afraid.
U.S. Reduces Aid to Jordan, Egypt - Middle East Times

The annual aid to Egypt will be cut to $1.5 billion this year, down from $1.7 billion in 2008, America in Arabic reported.
However, the report said cutbacks in foreign aid to Cairo would not be subtracted from the money allocated for defense, which amounts to $1.3 billion.
A budget proposal said $20 million would be spent on programs to promote democracy, human rights and government plans, and $35 million would be spent on education.
Egypt and Israel Sign Formal Treaty, Ending a State of War After 30 Years; Sadat and Begin Praise Carter's Role
-
The following was in the text of Mr. Sadat's address, but he did not read it publicly;
"No one is more entitled to your support and backing than the Palestinian people. A grave injustice was inflicted upon them in the past. They need a reassurance that they will be able to take the first step on the road to self-determination and statehood.
"A dialogue between the United States and the representatives of the Palestinian people will be a very helpful development. On the other hand, we must be certain that the provisions of the Camp David framework on the establishments of a self-governing authority with full autonomy are carried out. There must be a genuine transfer of authority to the Palestinians in their land. Without that, the problem will remain unsolved."
The Associated Press: `Color Purple' author tours Gaza

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker says a catastrophe has befallen the Gaza Strip and that she hopes she and others can help President Barack Obama "see what we see."
-
Walker said she believes Americans have mostly been exposed to the Israeli narrative since the establishment of the Jewish state in 1948 and know little about the plight of the Palestinians. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were expelled their homes at the time.

Each day, Israeli and United Nations officials sit down together in an office in Tel Aviv, Israel, to debate what the most important things are to let into Gaza: tents for the thousands of Palestinians who don't have homes now or glass to replace the windows that the Israeli attacks shattered? Should shoes take priority over first aid kits? Is it more important to bring in diapers or shovels?
"We're at the stage now where, for all of us in the humanitarian aid community, this is an unacceptable process," said Charles Clayton, the head of the Association of International Development Agencies, an umbrella organization that represents 75 groups. "It's not the details - it's the entire process which is unacceptable."
Memo From Cairo - Disentangling Layers of a Loaded Term in Search of a Thread of Peace - NYTimes.com
-
The recent fighting in Gaza offered a potent reminder of the challenge Washington faces in mediating a dispute when the United States refuses to speak directly with some of the main players, including Hamas and Hezbollah, which it calls terrorist groups. Whether the United States has declined to speak with hostile groups because it considers them terrorists, or whether it slaps the terrorist label on groups it wants to sanction or marginalize, a battle over the term terrorist has become a proxy for the larger issues that divide Washington and the Arab public.

Many here said they saw little distinction between Hamas’s shooting rockets into civilian areas of Israel and Israel’s shooting rockets into civilian areas of Gaza, even if Hamas militants were operating there or just hiding out.
