所以，至少就我身边的经验来说，中国的中产阶级似乎比英国的过得更奢侈。当然原因不用我多说，无非是中国劳动力便宜；收入转移力度相对低；有各种报销网络和灰色收入；人口年龄结构导致劳动力过剩；社会结构是金字塔形而西方是橄榄形……从这些意义上来说，中产阶级的舒适生活未必是好事，因为它背后可能隐藏着各种社会不公正或隐患：廉价劳动力背后意味着劳动者怎样的谈判力缺失？报销制度后面有多少黑幕？高速增长的环保代价是什么？人口老龄化之后怎么办？
事实上，发达国家的“发达”二字，很大程度上并不是指生活水准的奢华，而是社会的文明、公正和“共同富裕”。我曾感慨，目前这几代中国中产阶级的生活水平大约前无古人后无来者，他们可能比父辈和孙辈过得都要好。我们习惯于线性发展思维，以为生活水准会无限提高下去，但随着社会谈判结构的均衡化、收入调节力度提高、政治透明化减少灰色收入、环保成本提高、人口和社会结构变化，中国很多中产阶级的生活可能会逐渐“倒退”到英国的水平。
