Asia Times Online :: Falling and rising stars in Indonesia

  • It
is notable in Indonesia's personality-driven politics that platforms and
policies aren't expected to be the driving issue as coalitions are formed.

Is Jakarta a bad place to work? Say it ain't so | The Jakarta Post

"Jakarta is the second-worst place for expatriates to work in outside of the United States, Canada and Western Europe, according to a recent report published by Businessweek."\n\nDistrurbing because a) I just took a job in Jakarta, and b)this is ridiculous. Yes, the traffic is bad and there have been a few bombs, but to call Jakarta the second-worst city in the world to work in (behind only Lagos) is clearly absurd. (Manila, for example, comes to mind, and that's without even leaving the sub-region.) \nAnd c) this smacks badly of Islamophobia. The article quotes the report saying "Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim country and has suffered several high-profile attacks by terrorists targetting foreigners." As if the two halves of the sentence are interchangeable.

Asia Sentinel - Indonesia's Hot Potato: Jakarta doesn't much want back its terrorist, lately with a Guantanamo address

According to... sources, who claim to have interrogated him while in US custody Hambali has confessed to his involvement in bombings in Indonesia and is ready to submit himself to the local justice system. This might make more sense for him than facing the music in the US, let alone in Malaysia or the Philippines where he is also wanted. Malaysia would most likely put him in indefinite ISA detention without benefit of a court appearance. (His wife has been held under the ISA since 2003) !!The Philippines is too well-known for extra-judicial killings for him to be comfortable there.!!
