Brain science to help teachers get into kids' heads - science-in-society - 16 September 2009 - New Scientist

  • "In medicine, we have an excellent system in place to go from basic research to clinical practice, while in neuroscience we have the basic understanding of how the brain learns but still need to figure out how to translate this into the classroom," says Manfred Spitzer of the University of Ulm in Germany, one of the conference organisers. With brain imaging and, increasingly, genetic studies now complementing psychology research, a host of new findings could inform teachers about the conditions in which our brains can be primed to learn best.

News: Home Dissection Kits and More - Inside Higher Ed

  • Many institutions that prepare students for entrance into undergraduate nursing or allied health programs offer relevant prerequisite sciences courses in a hybrid format in which students must do laboratory work on campus under the supervision of an instructor, but can do everything else from the comfort of their home computer. Other institutions offer entirely online courses that attempt to replace this face-to-face laboratory portion with virtually simulated dissections and experiments that proceed only with a click of the mouse (the computer kind). Not surprisingly, there are many critics of this decidedly hands-off method.
