Google Update No Longer Runs in Background - Google update

Good news for users of Google Chrome, Picasa, and other Google desktop apps on Windows systems: Google Update, previously a background new version checker that was mighty hard to kill off, runs as a scheduled task, either when your system is idle or every so many hours. Better still, if you no longer use Google apps at all, it uninstalls itself. [via Google Operating System]

Google, authors and publishers recently entered into a
settlement agreement in The Authors Guild et al. v. Google Inc.,
a class action lawsuit brought against Google in connection with its use
of copyrighted books in its Book Search feature, and in The
McGraw-Hill Companies et al. v. Google Inc., a separate lawsuit by
publishers. The settlement, if approved by the court, will provide new
opportunities for authors and publishers to market their works. It will
also enhance the public’s ability to search for books and to get partial
text displays (and, in the case of many older works, full text displays)
at home, at school, and in libraries. At the same time, the settlement
may have significant implications for copyright law, competition,
research and scholarship.

查询数为总共发送的query个数，失败查询数为非正常返回的结果（可能被封禁了）。结果数是从抓取下来的页面中解析出来的结果个数（包括竞价拍名结果），结果中广告是搜索引擎根据竞价排名，嵌到正常结果中间的结果。赞助商结果是指在正常结果上面的一些广告，而右侧广告是指在搜索结果页右侧的非搜索结果。

Google announced last week that it would be raising the prices of its infant care services by almost 75%. This after bringing in employees to tell them of the change in advance and gauge their collective feedback. Although many parents were left in awe (as in, how could Google do this!), the company decided to implement the plan gradually over five quarters and reduce the price increase. The annual daycare costs for two kids would have risen from $33,000 per year to $57,000 per year (it's not clear how much the increase was reduced). Is Google doing evil here? Nope -- just joining reality.

Google’s “Don’t Be Evil” motto, first uttered by Googler Paul Buchheit
(now founder of FriendFeed) in 2001, has long been the pillar of their self-imposed code of conduct. It was amended somewhat in 2006 when CEO Eric Schmidt, under fire for entering the Chinese market with censorship restrictions, said “We actually did an evil scale and decided not to serve at all was worse evil.” He turned it into a sort of evil minimization algorithm.

据周二的一份管理层文档，谷歌的股东将提议该公司采取措施以确保网络连接的自由，并对其运营在人权上的影响建立评估机制。
提案将呈报公司在5月8日的年会，其中谷歌股东们要求，谷歌应承诺实施一定标准，包括不参与主动审查，在限制政治言论的国家里不收集用户信息等等。
