The Great Reno Balloon Race | Race Highlights

  • Dawn Patrol

A trademark of the Great Reno Balloon Race. Worth the early rise, the show features a handful of balloonists who are qualified to fly in the dark. This is a dangerous task as atmospheric conditions change drastically as the sun begins to rise. Balloonists glow, twinkle and fly along with choreographed music and crowd participation
    • - Susan said this dawn patrol is simply spectacular and cannot be missed. But need to get there no later than 5am! - on 2006-06-05

    • The early morning hour acts much like a good cup of coffee without the side effect, while the air briskly releases hints of fall. Looking around you see over acres of fabric bellowing, gently introducing panels of vibrant color into the landscape. As hot air encompasses the material, the liftoff begins and your spirits ascend with the hot-air balloons as they take flight. - on 2006-06-05

VirtualTahoe.com - Getting To and Around Lake Tahoe

  • At 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, Lake Tahoe is North
    America's largest alpine lake
    . The lake contains
an estimated 39.75 million gallons of (very blue) water,
enough to cover the entire state of California to a depth
of 14 inches. The water is 99.99 percent pure,
and a white dinner plate can be seen to a depth of 67
    feet!!
Lake Tahoe's altitude is 6,225 feet above
sea level. The California/Nevada state line bisects the
    lake.
    • We should probably focus mostly on south shore area. If time permits, then perhaps circle half way to connect back to HWY 80. - on 2006-06-05

  • Emerald Bay
One of the most photogenic spots in the world
is the tiny bay at the southwest corner of the lake. Emerald
    Bay State Park
affords amazing views of the mountains, the
lake, and Tahoe's only island, Fannette Island. Hike down along
the falls trail to the shore at the head of the bay to find
the striking structure known as Vikingsholm
    • Directions: 10 miles north on the 89, 22 miles south of Tahoe City. - on 2006-06-05
    • Emerald Bay, a California underwater state park, is one of the most popular vista points around Lake Tahoe. And where the Vikingsholm resides, a cool little Scandinavian Tea-house on the only island in the Lake. Wonder if we can take a hike and check it out. Must have great view. - on 2006-06-05
