Construder is a 3D game written in Perl and C, featuring a dynamic infinite world of cubes to explore and change. In an artificial infinite structure the player has to gather resources for construction purposes and his basic survival. It's 3D engine and basic game play is inspired by Minecraft and Infiniminer.

The goal is to get 10,000,000 score points and get the "Construder" rank. There are multiple ways to gain score points: building blocks in the world (for example for your home base), constructing items (such as teleporters for easier travel, message beacons for navigation or even programmable robots - which you can program to help you building things or gathering resources). Another way to earn many score points is to finish construction assignments.

Dangers the player might run into are starvation, as all his actions require biological energy and the randomly appearing robot drones, which - on a task to cleanup the world - teleport the player far away

A character that can’t die is a standard trope of gaming that’s boring at best and kills any tension or excitement at worst, but solutions are uncommon. Bringing attention to the disconnect between the character and their world provides fodder for satire, but beyond writing in a literal limbo, narrative justifications are limited in the medium. Personally, I’m more interested in games that embrace their hero’s immortality, using it as a tool to advance character and plot. Immortality then becomes a narrative tool that doesn’t fight its medium, but rather uses the medium’s unique traits in conjunction with traditional storytelling. Though it limits the number of genres that one can work with (since resurrection isn’t very realistic), it’s better than ignoring the issue. Sadly, that’s what most games do.

"I think you're right that "fun" is the wrong metric for discussion -- although it's probably a really good metric for, "Is this worth sixty of my dollars?"  I'd actually remove "fun" and replace it with "pleasurability."  Pleasure comes in many different forms, and sometimes mixed with pain, as it were.  Thus, pleasure to be found in sad or tragic stories, or even in terror (horror films, roller coasters, whatever).  Pleasure comes in conquering a system (something knitters do just as much as gamers) or in solving a problem (gardening, knitting, gaming, woodworking, pretty much everything).  ...  Where do we derive the pleasure from gaming?  Is it from seeing a pre-defined narrative unfold?  Is it from participating in the unfolding of that narrative?  Is it from conflict?  I think the answer to all is "yes" and also "no" and also that there are a hundred more reasons."

Basically, you play as a planet. Well, in the beginning you are just a tiny asteroid, adrift in the vast not-quite-emptiness of space. By colliding with other asteroids you grow in size and eventually you become a small planet. Now sallying up beside asteroids will cause them to go into orbit around you, which you can absorb to grow even bigger. Keep going and you'll become a small star, able to have several planets orbit you at once, each with their own field of tiny satellites and each with the potential for life.

Life is a funny thing. When life develops on your planets it this causes miniscule spaceships to launch out and patrol your solar system, sometimes being a nuisance by destroying useful asteroids and sometimes being helpful by protecting your planet from neighbouring systems that are likewise crowded with life. That's right, there's other systems floating about, competing with you for resources. It's all a bit reminiscent of Osmos, in that it has that dog-eat-dog feel to it. I mean, the entire game is made of circles which for all intents and purposes are trying to eat each other.

DarkPlaces is a Quake modification I have built over the course of 6 years on and off experimenting, it got somewhat of an overhaul when the Quake engine source code was released, and I began developing a custom OpenGL-only engine for it and other mods, which supports Windows WGL and Linux GLX, and has greatly improved graphics and image quality.

It can not easily be described, as it is simply an improved Quake, not a total conversion (yet, anyway).

this week I’m going to talk about a monster of a game that you’ll need four geeky friends for, and a colossal table, and hundreds upon hundreds of hours, and I’m doing this to you because to exist is to suffer. This game is called Descent: The Road to Legend, and it’s the single biggest, most brilliant game you’ve never heard of.

The basics: Descent is a dungeon crawling game. A team of four hero players have to progress through a grid-based dungeon under the control of a fifth player, the Overlord. The Overlord moves monsters around, spawns new monsters, and casts traps and spells on the players with the aim of either impeding or killing the heroes. So it’s a bit like Dungeons & Dragons, except with all of the roleplaying and talking stripped out and replaced with a Dungeon Master who’ve actively trying to murder you.

As I was saying, Descent is a big girl.

FreeLords is a turn-based strategy game in the style of the classical Warlords. In short, you produce armies in cities and use them to conquer more cities and finally defeat the other players. We have already extended the game design at some points, e.g. by introducing hitpoints for the armies or using simultaneous moves.

The game was started in 2000 by Michael Bartl using C++ and Qt. In 2007, we decided to do a Java port due to several serious restrictions (dependencies for example were a real pain).

Information on the timeline can be lumped into three categories:
A map of time - "Your opponent will attack you in 1 minute"
Inform strategy - "You should have taken advantage of your resources and built a larger army 2 minutes ago, go change the past"
Changes to the timeline - "Your opponent just undid an entire battle in the past"

Changes in history are not instantly propagated through the timeline, but instead are brought forward via evenly separated timewaves, giving the player opportunities to plan and react to those past changes before the next time wave sweeps by. These changes from the revised history are not reflected on the players' screens until the proper timewave passes the player.

Featuring a unique interactive narrative style and imaginative hand-painted environments in dazzling full-HD, Bastion challenges players to build a new world from the broken remnants of the past. The goal of the game is to construct a safe haven in the wake of the Calamity, a cataclysmic event that shattered the world. As players journey into the wild unknown in search of survivors and supplies, they will confront strange beasts, forge an array of customizable weapons, and gain new powers from specially-brewed spirits. The entire play experience of Bastion is dynamically narrated, gradually revealing a rich backstory as the narrator reacts to the player's actions in real time, giving context and deeper meaning to their interactions. Gameplay is designed to reward finesse and experimentation through a crisp and responsive feel, while the suspenseful story unfolds at the player's own pace. Bastion is the debut title from Supergiant Games, an independent start-up studio founded by ex-designers of the Command & Conquer series.
