The Bill that Nobody Read: The Economic Stimulus Package (H.R. 1) « Republican Ranting

So, I know it's been a while since Congress passed H.R. 1, the economic stimulus plan, but C-SPAN finally uploaded and categorized all the videos, so better late than never. I wanted to show you all just how much the Democratic leadership tried to hide the details of the latest stimulus plan

Vladimir Putin Warns U.S. Not to Fall into Socialism « Republican Ranting

  • Well, it appears as if Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin knows more about economics than President Obama. The following is an excerpt of Putin’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland (transcript courtesy of the Wall Street Journal). The full speech can be found here

President Obama Signs $787 Billion Economic Stimulus Plan « Republican Ranting

  • Moments ago, President Obama singed H.R. 1, the economic stimulus package into law. Unfortunately, I was taking a phone call during the beginning of his speech, so I couldn’t live blog it, but I did catch some key parts (I’ll do a summary of the whole speech later).

Breaking: Senate Passes Revised Economic Stimulus Plan: 60-38 « Republican Ranting

  • Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) just got back from Ohio, where he was attending his mother’s memorial services, and has casted an “Aye” vote for the economic stimulus package. That was the 60th Aye vote needed, since Ted Kennedy (D-MA) was not voting. The 3 Republicans who sided with the Democrats before, Arlen Specter (R-PA), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), and Susan Collins (R-ME) voted with the Democrats.

Live: Senate 1 Vote Away from Passing Economic Stimulus Package « Republican Ranting

  • This is breaking news, the Senate began voting on the new version of the stimulus bill around 5:30 P.M. (I was gone). The vote so far is 59 AYE votes, and they’re waiting in Sherrod Brown (D-OH), who is expected to vote AYE. He was at a wake for his mother (funeral services will be tomorrow). He’s expected to reach the 60 vote mark.

House of Representatives Approves Revised Stimulus Bill: 246-183 « Republican Ranting

  • A little over an hour ago, the House of Representatives approved the revised economic stimulus package (that’s the package where the joint conference hammered out the details between the Senate and House bill differences). 246 Democrats voted for the bill; all 183 Republicans voted NAY, with 7 Democrats joining them. 1 Democrat also voted present, and 1 Democrat and 2 Republicans were not voting.

House of Representatives Debates and Votes to Congratulate the Pittsburg Steelers for Their Superbowl Win « Republican Ranting

  • Today, the House of Representatives (at least for the first half of the day) considered and discussed 4 suspension bills (bills passed under suspension of the rules), where debate is limited to 40 minutes. Today, they agreed to 4 resolutions, the first of which was to congratulate the Pittsburg Steelers on their 6th Super Bowl win (officially House Resolution 110: Congratulating the National Football League champion Pittsburgh Steelers for winning Super Bowl XLIII and becoming the most successful franchise in NFL history with their record 6th Super Bowl title, sponsored by Representative Michael Doyle [D-PA14-Pittsburg]). For those of you who would like to see it, here’s the C-SPAN video of that debate

Live: Senate Voting on $838 Billion Economic Stimulus Bill « Republican Ranting

  • The Senate is now voting on the $838 billion economic stimulus bill. This vote will be on the Collins/Nelson (Susan Collins [D-ME] / Ben Nelson [D-NE]) substitution amendment (basically an amendment that made a bunch of changes instead of the old bill being amended 1 by 1). It’s still a terrible bill.

A Normal Day in the Senate: Economic Stimulus, Health Care … Pornography at the National Science Foundation? « Republican Ranting

  • Alright, so I was watching the Senate discuss more amendments to H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the latest economic stimulus bill. Anyway, Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) was talking about his amendment and some health care stuff, when all of a sudden, he breaks off on to the subject of pornography being viewed at work by some of the staff at the National Science Foundation, and that we need to make sure that stimulus money isn’t going towards wasting time at work (whether that’s pornography or not - people should be doing work at work, not viewing pornography or playing Free Cell). Here’s that video clip, courtesy of C-SPAN

Some Republican Governors Break Party Ranks and Support Stimulus Bill « Republican Ranting

  • Alright, this news article is a few days old, but since the Senate hasn’t voted on the stimulus package yet, it’s still applicable. I read an AP article that a friend showed me, and while I won’t post the whole thing, I’ll highlight some key points. The article talks about Republican Governors who are urging Congress to pass the stimulus bill. The full article can be read here. Then I went looking for more positions on the bill and found a few other governors’ positions.

House of Representatives Passes $819 Billion Economic Stimulus Package « Republican Ranting

  • On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, H.R. 1, Congress’s latest economic stimulus package. That bill passed 244-188; 11 Democrats broke ranks, while all of the voting Republicans voted against it. First, I would like to commend the 11 Democrats who voted against the $819 billion “stimulus” bill. This bill is an atrocity to the Congressional system of appropriations. Instead of focusing on true STIMULUS (after all, it is an “economic STIMULUS package”), the Democrats in the House packed the bill with billions of dollars of un-stimulating spending. For those of you who want to read the sources, here’s the version of the bill as it was introduced (it has been slightly changed, but not too much), here’s the summary from the House Appropriations Committee, and here’s the cost estimate from the Congressional Budget Office. And here’s the link to the roll call vote, Roll number 46.

Another Perspective on the Auto Bailout « Republican Ranting

  • I came across a column by economist Thomas Sowell this morning entitled “Postponing Reality,” and I’d just like to discuss part of this column with you:
We are told that the collapse of the Big Three automakers in Detroit would have repercussions across the country, causing mass layoffs among firms that supply the automobile makers with parts, and shutting down automobile dealerships from coast to coast.

53% of Rescued Homeowners Still Not Paying Mortgages on Time « Republican Ranting

  • I was watching FOX News the other day, and Neil Cavuto the Great (yes, I’ve now given Cavuto the Republican Ranting honorary title of “the Great”) was discussing a bill before Congress that would help bankrupt homeowners restructure their mortgages. Cavuto discusses the issue with Wall Street Journal editorialist Steve Moore. Watch the video, and I’ll discuss it below

NOW We’re Officially in a Recession « Republican Ranting

  • I know this is a few days late, but life has been hectic (next week is final exam week for me). But this is something that I really wanted to post about.
Back in April, I made the statement that we were not in a recession, because we had not yet seen an economic decline “lasting more than a few months” (which is the definition given by the National Bureau for Economic Research [NBER]).

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford: “Don’t Bail Out My State” « Republican Ranting

  • I find myself in a lonely position. While many states and local governments are lining up for a bailout from Congress, I went to Washington recently to oppose such bailouts. I may be the only governor to do so.
