Kansas Can Now Afford to Pay Tax Refunds and State Employees « Republican Ranting

  • Yesterday I was watching America’s Newsroom, and Megyn Kelly did a story about the budget crisis in Kansas. According to the Governor, Kathleen Sebelius (D), the state was not going to be able to pay tax refunds or state employees on time. Sebelius wants to borrow money from other state accounts within Kansas; however, Republican legislators want budget cuts because they feel Sebelius’s solution is irresponsible. Republican leaders in the state House and Senate (both where they’re in the majority) argued that the internal borrowing wasn’t legal until the Kansas had a balanced budget for the fiscal year (the fiscal year ends June 30).

Obama Bitter that Republicans Rejected the Stimulus Package? « Republican Ranting

  • So, I was just watching the news, and they were talking about a picture and caption of the White House website. Neil Cavuto (FOX News) was asking if the following caption was a cheap shot at Republicans. Here’s the picture (I’ll discuss it below and ask for your opinion) (see here for the original picture; it’s picture 4: http://www.whitehouse.gov/photogallery/The-story-of-the-economic-recovery-package/):

Live: Senate 1 Vote Away from Passing Economic Stimulus Package « Republican Ranting

  • This is breaking news, the Senate began voting on the new version of the stimulus bill around 5:30 P.M. (I was gone). The vote so far is 59 AYE votes, and they’re waiting in Sherrod Brown (D-OH), who is expected to vote AYE. He was at a wake for his mother (funeral services will be tomorrow). He’s expected to reach the 60 vote mark.

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich Has Been Removed from Office « Republican Ranting

  • Voting has just started to remove Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich (D) from office and the Senate has just achieved enough votes to officially remove him from office (40 votes). So far, no one has voted Nay.

House of Representatives Passes $819 Billion Economic Stimulus Package « Republican Ranting

  • On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, H.R. 1, Congress’s latest economic stimulus package. That bill passed 244-188; 11 Democrats broke ranks, while all of the voting Republicans voted against it. First, I would like to commend the 11 Democrats who voted against the $819 billion “stimulus” bill. This bill is an atrocity to the Congressional system of appropriations. Instead of focusing on true STIMULUS (after all, it is an “economic STIMULUS package”), the Democrats in the House packed the bill with billions of dollars of un-stimulating spending. For those of you who want to read the sources, here’s the version of the bill as it was introduced (it has been slightly changed, but not too much), here’s the summary from the House Appropriations Committee, and here’s the cost estimate from the Congressional Budget Office. And here’s the link to the roll call vote, Roll number 46.

ACLU Director: Bush Was “Very worst President for civil liberties” « Republican Ranting

  • A couple days ago on the Colbert Report, Steven Colbert interviewed American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Director Anthony Romero. In the interview, Romero said that Bush was the “very worst President for civil liberties,” and later that he was ”the worst President in 8 long years.” Perhaps he meant “for 8 long years,” since he was the only President in the past 8 years, so Romero’s statement really didn’t make sense. (Sorry this is up a few days late - I lost me entire draft that I wrote the 1st time, and that took a few hours to do.) Anyway, watch the video, and I’ll discuss his statements below.

Illinois Senate Appointee, Roland Burris, Denied Entry to the Senate. Was That Denial Legal? « Republican Ranting

  • Today, Roland Burris (D-IL), the guy that Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich (D) appointed to fill President-Elect Obama’s vacant seat, went to Washington, D.C., proclaiming himself the junior Senator from Illinois. Before trying to enter the Senate, he told reporters, “My name is Roland Burris. I am the junior senator from the state of Illinois.”

Bill Richardson Withdraws Nomination for Commerce Secretary Amidst Corruption Allegations « Republican Ranting

  • Well, apparently I came back from vacation to quite a busy news day - Governor Bill Richardson (D-NM) has withdrawn his nomination to be Obama’s Secretary of Commerce. Richardson, meanwhile, will keep his position of governor while he’s facing a federal grand jury investigation. That investigation involves allegations that he exchanged government contracts for contributions to three of his political committees. Richardson denies that he did anything wrong, but the investigation won’t be finished before he has to go to a Senate confirmation hearing, and that could delay his confirmation. Richardson put out the following statement

Another Perspective on the Auto Bailout « Republican Ranting

  • I came across a column by economist Thomas Sowell this morning entitled “Postponing Reality,” and I’d just like to discuss part of this column with you:
We are told that the collapse of the Big Three automakers in Detroit would have repercussions across the country, causing mass layoffs among firms that supply the automobile makers with parts, and shutting down automobile dealerships from coast to coast.

Barack Obama “Saddened and Sobered” Over the Arrest of Blagojevich « Republican Ranting

  • Today, while meeting with Vice President-Elect Joe Biden and former Vice President Al Gore to discuss energy and climate change, President-Elect Barack Obama confirmed that he was in no way involved with Governor Blagojevich’s attempts to profit off of the Senate nomination that he was going to make. Obama said that he was “saddened and sobered” about the events that transpired earlier today. I’ll let you watch the video for yourself

A Michigander’s Perspective: The Goverment Should Not Bail Out the Auto Industry « Republican Ranting

  • As rumors fly that a $25 billion bailout of the auto industry may actually come to a vote in the Congress, I figured that I, a citizen of Metro Detroit and Michigan should weigh in.
    First, the facts:
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has called for “emergency and limited financial assistance” for General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler where legislation would be passed that would make the automakers eligible for financial support under the $700 billion bailout bill that was passed in October.

4 Days to Go: Senate Prediction: Democrats Gain 6 Seats « Republican Ranting

  • Here’s my Senate prediction. I already did my Presidential election prediction. The colors ARE switched from what the normal media colors, so sorry about that, but that’s the way the website I use does it. The maps are courtesy of Dave Leip’s U.S. Election Atlas, and my most current prediction can always be found here. On to the predictions…

Alaska Senator Ted Stevens Found Guilty on All Counts of Making False Statements; Hello Senator Mark Begich « Republican Ranting

  • Well, the jury of 8 women and 4 men has deliberated and has come back to find Senator Stevens (R-AK) guilty on all 7 counts of making false statements (lying on U.S. Senate financial disclosure forms for 1999-2006).
Before entering the courtroom, Stevens told reporters, “Put this down. I am not stepping down. I’m going to run through, and I’m going to win this election.” After hearing the verdict, he allegedly told his wife, Catherine, “It’s not over yet.”

Joe Biden: Israel’s Best Friend in the Senate? « Republican Ranting

  • Joe Biden made an interesting comment during last night’s Vice Presidential debate: “Gwen, no one in the United States Senate has been a better friend to Israel than Joe Biden. I would have never, ever joined this ticket were I not absolutely sure Barack Obama shared my passion.”

Obama and Biden Voted Against Funding for Rebuilding After Katrina, But Supported Bridge to Nowhere Funding « Republican Ranting

  • So, I found something interesting today. Back in 2005, Congress voted on and passed H.R. 3058 [109th Congress]: “Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development, the Judiciary, the District of Columbia,…”. This purpose of this bill was for “Making appropriations for the Departments of Transportation, Treasury, and Housing and Urban Development, the Judiciary, District of Columbia, and independent agencies for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2006, and for other purposes.”
