Unfortunately, I don’t have time to post any commentary, as I’m headed out of town, but here’s the press release that I got

Breaking: Senate Passes Revised Economic Stimulus Plan: 60-38 « Republican Ranting

  • Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) just got back from Ohio, where he was attending his mother’s memorial services, and has casted an “Aye” vote for the economic stimulus package. That was the 60th Aye vote needed, since Ted Kennedy (D-MA) was not voting. The 3 Republicans who sided with the Democrats before, Arlen Specter (R-PA), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), and Susan Collins (R-ME) voted with the Democrats.

  • So, yesterday, Catherine Jun, from the Detroit News, did an article about “Patriotism in Action.” Some of you may have noticed her comment on one of my posts, where she said she wanted to interview me.
Well, she did, and it appeared as the last segment of the article, available on the Detroit News’ site.

  • During an interview at West Chester University (just outside Philadelphia, PA) with Chris Matthews on Hardball: College Tour, Obama was asked, “At any time in this campaign, did you have a chuckle … something … that you just went to bed laughing about.” Obama responded with, “Oh, I think that happens once a day, but then I stopped watching cable news.” Matthews responded, “Oh.”

North Korea Fires Four Short Range Missiles into West Sea « Republican Ranting

  • This just came in from the YONHAP News Agency out of Seoul, South Korea:
… North Korea test-fired several missiles into the sea off the country’s west coast Friday….
The test, believed to be of Russian Styx missiles [range of 46 kilometers], comes one day after the communist nation threw out all South Korean government officials from the inter-Korean industrial complex in the North in apparent disgruntlement over the Lee Myung-bak government’s hard-line North Korea policy.

Hugo Chavez Sends 10 Batallions to Colombian Border « Republican Ranting

  • Today around noon EST, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez ordered his defence minister to “move 10 battalions [several thousand soldiers] to the border with Colombia for me, immediately.” This move is coming in response to Colombia moving 1 mile into Ecuador and killing Raúl Reyes, a top commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a terrorist organization in Colombia that was started as a military wing of the Colombian Communist Party. Prior to Colombia’s invasion, Chavez had said that a move like this would be “cause for war.”

Update on the Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Scandal « Republican Ranting

  • OK, well details are coming out of this thing faster than details about the 2008 primaries. See here for my previous post: http://inkslwc.wordpress.com/2008/01/26/detroit-mayor-kwame-kilpatrick-involved-in-another-scandal/.
So, here are the new details:
    Monday, January 28th
Chief of Staff Christine Beatty, Kilpatrick’s alleged (and late confirmed) mistress resigned.
In response, Council President Pro Tem Monica Conyers (acting president while Ken Cockrel Jr. is over seas) and Councilwoman JoAnn Watson said that the council should not wait for Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy’s investigation to be finished, buth that the Council should also conduct its own investigation.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Involved in Another Scandal « Republican Ranting

  • Well, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has got himself into (another!) scandal. How the man ever got re-elected is still a question I’ve never been able to figure out the answer to - heck, even my hard core Democratic grandma can’t stand him.
So, here’s what’s going on. According to a Free Press article, the Mayor and Christine Beatty, his Chief of Staff, had an affair. No biggie right? Wrong - unfortunately (or I guess fortunately for Detroiters if it gets this moron out of office), Kilpatrick and Beatty denied having an affair … while under oath … during a trial (a whistle-blower lawsuit brought by former cops Gary Brown and Harold Nelthrope)… the outcome of which cost the city $9 million. It also says that the two misled jurors when they said that they did not fire Deputy Police Chief Gary Brown back in 2003.

Central Michigan to Hold Expulsion Hearing for Dennis Lennox « Republican Ranting

  • OK, well I might as well join the bandwagon on this one. Central Michigan University plans on holding an expulsion hearingagainst Dennis Lennox on January 30th. The following is an excerpt from CMU’s letter to Lennox:
You have been cited for violating sections 3.2.2 (Providing false information to a university official); 3.2.15 (Not identifying yourself to a university agent when asked) and 3.2.32 (Distributing printed materials in violation of the Advocacy Policy) of the CMU Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities and Disciplinary Procedures during an incident that occurred in Anspach Hall on October 23, 2007.

Gunman with a Sword Arrested in Washington, D.C. « Republican Ranting

  • Well here’s an interesting story - 38 year old Michael Gorbey was arrested in Washington, D.C. today for carrying a loaded shotgun, a Samuri sword, and a bag of gunpowder. He also had a bow in his car as well as wires coming from his glove box and propane tanks (although bomb squad officials destroyed those items, they say that they were not rigged to explode. Capital Police charged Gorbey with the charge of “felon in posession of a firearm” (apparently he had a long criminal record - who’d have thought). Luckily, no shots were fired and nobody was hurt.

Real ID Plan: Analyzed, Scrutinized, Criticized, and Praised « Republican Ranting

  • OK, so on Friday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released its regulations for the Real ID plan. States have until 2014 to reissue the new “tamper-proof” licenses to those born during or after 1964 and until 2017 for those born before that, a compromise to appease some states who complained that it would be too hard and costly to implement the plan. Many states have argued that it’s unconstitutional and still too costly.

Detroit Students Aren’t Even Smart Enough To Know When They’re Shot « Republican Ranting

  • Well I was reading through the news from back home in Wayne county and I came across this. A gun accidentally went off in a science class in Finney High School in Detroit. Apparently the teacher heard a noise but couldn’t identify where it came from. The Detroit News said that it was in a bag and the bag may have fallen setting off the gun, or the gun may have fallen out of the bag. The 9th grader who was shot realized that he was shot when he got home (how do you not realize that you’re shot!), and the 9th grader who brought the gun was arrested that night.

Katrina Victim is Suing the U.S. for $3 Quadrillion « Republican Ranting

  • And I hated lawsuits before this - wow! A moron who built his house below sea level just to get it demolished so now he’s doing the American thing and suing somebody victim of Hurricane Katrina is suing the United States Army Corps of Engineers for $3,000,000,000,000,000 (3 quadrillion). (The U.S. gross domestic product [GDP] was$13.2 trillion in 2007, just for a comparison.) The claim is based from Baker, Louisiana (about 93 miles northwest of New Orleans), an area with a trailer park where many victims are now living (so in other words, nobody but the people seeing the suit know where the man/woman lived before Katrina).

Topless Woman in an Ohio Park Leads to a Bust for Cops « Republican Ranting

  • Here’s a story I’ve had in the queue for a slow news day (Bill Richardson DID drop out today, but I’ve done enough election posts, so I’ll worry about that later):
I saw this on ABC and saved it, but the page has been taken down or moved, so I don’t have many details, but what happened was a woman was sunbathing topless under a tree in Berliner Park (Columbus, Ohio). Robin Garrison, an off duty fireman approached her and talked to her. Eventually, she asked to see his penis, so he pulled it out and showed her. Then cops in an unmarked van pulled up and arrested him, charging him with a misdemeanor of public indecency. Being topless in the park is allowed, but anything more than that is against Columbus law. Video footage taken by the police was used to help convict him resulting in an order to not go to the park, a fine of $250, and a year on probation. The last update I heard was that he was on paid desk duty pending an internal investigation. Garrison plans on appealing the case, arguing that the jury wasn’t given the definition of entrapment (I find this hard to believe, but I wasn’t there).
