Massachusetts Proposes Using GPS Chips to Tax Drivers’ Mileage « Republican Ranting
-
Yesterday, on Happening Now on FOX News, there was a discussion a new idea for a way for Massachusetts to increase their revenue. The idea was to use GPS chips to track mileage (mileage only and NOT location) of cars, and then tax drivers based on how far they go. Some like the idea, which is being tested in Oregon. FOX interviewed Jim Whitty from the Oregon Department of Transportation. Meanwhile others, such as Massachusetts state Senator Scott Brown views it as Orwellian and an invasion of privacy. Brown also said that taxes are too high already in Massachusetts. Watch the video and I’ll discuss it below (video courtesy of FOX News):
Kansas Can Now Afford to Pay Tax Refunds and State Employees « Republican Ranting
-
Yesterday I was watching America’s Newsroom, and Megyn Kelly did a story about the budget crisis in Kansas. According to the Governor, Kathleen Sebelius (D), the state was not going to be able to pay tax refunds or state employees on time. Sebelius wants to borrow money from other state accounts within Kansas; however, Republican legislators want budget cuts because they feel Sebelius’s solution is irresponsible. Republican leaders in the state House and Senate (both where they’re in the majority) argued that the internal borrowing wasn’t legal until the Kansas had a balanced budget for the fiscal year (the fiscal year ends June 30).

Lucie Kim Frivolously Sues Miley Cyrus Over “Racist” Picture « Republican Ranting
-
Alright, so I heard about this story yesterday, and it really got my blood boiling. Not because I’m terribly offended by Miley Cyrus, but because lawsuits in America have reached such an asinine stage.

Happy Valentine’s Day « Republican Ranting
-
I just wanted to really quickly wish everybody out there a happy Valentine’s Day. If you have a special someone in your life, congratulations, and I wish you the best. If you’re single, enjoy the fact that you don’t have to spend money on a gift for anybody (more chocolate and candy for you!)
Breaking: Senate Passes Revised Economic Stimulus Plan: 60-38 « Republican Ranting
-
Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) just got back from Ohio, where he was attending his mother’s memorial services, and has casted an “Aye” vote for the economic stimulus package. That was the 60th Aye vote needed, since Ted Kennedy (D-MA) was not voting. The 3 Republicans who sided with the Democrats before, Arlen Specter (R-PA), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), and Susan Collins (R-ME) voted with the Democrats.
Live: Senate 1 Vote Away from Passing Economic Stimulus Package « Republican Ranting
-
This is breaking news, the Senate began voting on the new version of the stimulus bill around 5:30 P.M. (I was gone). The vote so far is 59 AYE votes, and they’re waiting in Sherrod Brown (D-OH), who is expected to vote AYE. He was at a wake for his mother (funeral services will be tomorrow). He’s expected to reach the 60 vote mark.

House of Representatives Passes $819 Billion Economic Stimulus Package « Republican Ranting
-
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, H.R. 1, Congress’s latest economic stimulus package. That bill passed 244-188; 11 Democrats broke ranks, while all of the voting Republicans voted against it. First, I would like to commend the 11 Democrats who voted against the $819 billion “stimulus” bill. This bill is an atrocity to the Congressional system of appropriations. Instead of focusing on true STIMULUS (after all, it is an “economic STIMULUS package”), the Democrats in the House packed the bill with billions of dollars of un-stimulating spending. For those of you who want to read the sources, here’s the version of the bill as it was introduced (it has been slightly changed, but not too much), here’s the summary from the House Appropriations Committee, and here’s the cost estimate from the Congressional Budget Office. And here’s the link to the roll call vote, Roll number 46.

The Porn Industry Wants a Bailout Now « Republican Ranting
-
Folks, this is why I opposed the bailouts. I predicted this (not this EXACTLY - I don’t think ANYBODY predicted this exactly) - I predicted that after we began handing bailouts to financial institutions and auto makers, that everybody and his mother would ask for a bailout. Well, yesterday, that pretty much happened: Hustler publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis that they plan on requesting that Congress allocate $5 billion for a bailout … a bailout of, you guessed it … the adult entertainment industry.

Should the U.S. Government Be Tracking Santa? « Republican Ranting
-
Alright, I already know that I’m gonna take some heat for this post, but I’ve never been one to back down due to unpopularity. This year, like they have for the past 53 years, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) tracked Santa as he travelled from the North Pole around the world delivering presents. Now, NORAD isn’t all U.S. funded, since it’s a joint organization of the Canadian Forces Air Command and the United States Air Force.

Another Perspective on the Auto Bailout « Republican Ranting

I came across a column by economist Thomas Sowell this morning entitled “Postponing Reality,” and I’d just like to discuss part of this column with you:
We are told that the collapse of the Big Three automakers in Detroit would have repercussions across the country, causing mass layoffs among firms that supply the automobile makers with parts, and shutting down automobile dealerships from coast to coast.

Obama said that he was “saddened and sobered” about the events that transpired earlier today. I’ll let you watch the video for yourself

NOW We’re Officially in a Recession « Republican Ranting
-
I know this is a few days late, but life has been hectic (next week is final exam week for me). But this is something that I really wanted to post about.
Back in April, I made the statement that we were not in a recession, because we had not yet seen an economic decline “lasting more than a few months” (which is the definition given by the National Bureau for Economic Research [NBER]).
