Do Ron Paul’s Supporters Refuse to Admit His Faults When It Comes to Earmarks? « Republican Ranting
I was reading an article on ConservativeHQ.com, “Ron Paul’s Pork Problem,” which basically criticized Representative Ron Paul (R-TX) for being a hypocrite on fiscal conservative principles by arguing for smaller government and less government spending but getting 22 earmarks (totaling $96.1 million) in the recent $410 billion omnibus spending bill.
D.C. Voting Rights Act is Clearly Unconstitutional « Republican Ranting
Last Thursday, the Senate passed the District of Columbia House Voting Rights Act of 2009, which gives the District of Columbia a voting member in the House of Representatives and eliminates the position of D.C. Delegate, who represents the District now. Currently, that delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton, can only vote when her vote does not affect the outcome; however, she is allowed to introduce bills, and this bill was introduced by Norton. The bill would also give an additional seat to Utah, so that the partisan makeup of the House stayed the same.
The Bill that Nobody Read: The Economic Stimulus Package (H.R. 1) « Republican Ranting
So, I know it's been a while since Congress passed H.R. 1, the economic stimulus plan, but C-SPAN finally uploaded and categorized all the videos, so better late than never. I wanted to show you all just how much the Democratic leadership tried to hide the details of the latest stimulus plan
Kansas Can Now Afford to Pay Tax Refunds and State Employees « Republican Ranting
-
Yesterday I was watching America’s Newsroom, and Megyn Kelly did a story about the budget crisis in Kansas. According to the Governor, Kathleen Sebelius (D), the state was not going to be able to pay tax refunds or state employees on time. Sebelius wants to borrow money from other state accounts within Kansas; however, Republican legislators want budget cuts because they feel Sebelius’s solution is irresponsible. Republican leaders in the state House and Senate (both where they’re in the majority) argued that the internal borrowing wasn’t legal until the Kansas had a balanced budget for the fiscal year (the fiscal year ends June 30).
Obama Bitter that Republicans Rejected the Stimulus Package? « Republican Ranting
-
So, I was just watching the news, and they were talking about a picture and caption of the White House website. Neil Cavuto (FOX News) was asking if the following caption was a cheap shot at Republicans. Here’s the picture (I’ll discuss it below and ask for your opinion) (see here for the original picture; it’s picture 4: http://www.whitehouse.gov/photogallery/The-story-of-the-economic-recovery-package/):
President Obama Signs $787 Billion Economic Stimulus Plan « Republican Ranting
-
Moments ago, President Obama singed H.R. 1, the economic stimulus package into law. Unfortunately, I was taking a phone call during the beginning of his speech, so I couldn’t live blog it, but I did catch some key parts (I’ll do a summary of the whole speech later).
House of Representatives Approves Revised Stimulus Bill: 246-183 « Republican Ranting
-
A little over an hour ago, the House of Representatives approved the revised economic stimulus package (that’s the package where the joint conference hammered out the details between the Senate and House bill differences). 246 Democrats voted for the bill; all 183 Republicans voted NAY, with 7 Democrats joining them. 1 Democrat also voted present, and 1 Democrat and 2 Republicans were not voting.
House of Representatives Debates and Votes to Congratulate the Pittsburg Steelers for Their Superbowl Win « Republican Ranting
-
Today, the House of Representatives (at least for the first half of the day) considered and discussed 4 suspension bills (bills passed under suspension of the rules), where debate is limited to 40 minutes. Today, they agreed to 4 resolutions, the first of which was to congratulate the Pittsburg Steelers on their 6th Super Bowl win (officially House Resolution 110: Congratulating the National Football League champion Pittsburgh Steelers for winning Super Bowl XLIII and becoming the most successful franchise in NFL history with their record 6th Super Bowl title, sponsored by Representative Michael Doyle [D-PA14-Pittsburg]). For those of you who would like to see it, here’s the C-SPAN video of that debate
Happy 200th Birthday to Abraham Lincoln « Republican Ranting
-
Well, as most of you know, today is Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday. The government has been celebrating this all day, and I’ve been watching the Bicentenial Celebration that the Congress has been holding in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda since I got back from class.

Begich (D-AK) - Aye
Live: Senate Voting on $838 Billion Economic Stimulus Bill « Republican Ranting
-
The Senate is now voting on the $838 billion economic stimulus bill. This vote will be on the Collins/Nelson (Susan Collins [D-ME] / Ben Nelson [D-NE]) substitution amendment (basically an amendment that made a bunch of changes instead of the old bill being amended 1 by 1). It’s still a terrible bill.
A Normal Day in the Senate: Economic Stimulus, Health Care … Pornography at the National Science Foundation? « Republican Ranting
-
Alright, so I was watching the Senate discuss more amendments to H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the latest economic stimulus bill. Anyway, Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) was talking about his amendment and some health care stuff, when all of a sudden, he breaks off on to the subject of pornography being viewed at work by some of the staff at the National Science Foundation, and that we need to make sure that stimulus money isn’t going towards wasting time at work (whether that’s pornography or not - people should be doing work at work, not viewing pornography or playing Free Cell). Here’s that video clip, courtesy of C-SPAN
House of Representatives Passes $819 Billion Economic Stimulus Package « Republican Ranting
-
On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, H.R. 1, Congress’s latest economic stimulus package. That bill passed 244-188; 11 Democrats broke ranks, while all of the voting Republicans voted against it. First, I would like to commend the 11 Democrats who voted against the $819 billion “stimulus” bill. This bill is an atrocity to the Congressional system of appropriations. Instead of focusing on true STIMULUS (after all, it is an “economic STIMULUS package”), the Democrats in the House packed the bill with billions of dollars of un-stimulating spending. For those of you who want to read the sources, here’s the version of the bill as it was introduced (it has been slightly changed, but not too much), here’s the summary from the House Appropriations Committee, and here’s the cost estimate from the Congressional Budget Office. And here’s the link to the roll call vote, Roll number 46.
Barack Obama Issues Executive Order Increasing Presidential Transparency « Republican Ranting
-
Yesterday, President Obama issued his first (or second) executive order, rescinding Executive Order 13233, issued by President Bush. Obama’s executive order restored some transparency to the White House, back to the levels before President Bush.
Illinois House Votes to Impeach Governor Rod Blagojevich « Republican Ranting
-
The Illinois House of Representatives, just in the past hour, voted to impeach Governor Rod Blagojevich (D), 114-1. The only representative voting against impeachment was Milton Patterson (D-South Chicago). Representative Elga Jefferies (D-Chicago) voted “present.” Typical Cook County politics, if you ask me. I commend the other 114 representatives who voted in the affirmative to impeach Governor Blagojevich. This will no go to the Senate, who will decide whether or not to remove Blagojevich from office.
ACLU Director: Bush Was “Very worst President for civil liberties” « Republican Ranting
-
A couple days ago on the Colbert Report, Steven Colbert interviewed American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Director Anthony Romero. In the interview, Romero said that Bush was the “very worst President for civil liberties,” and later that he was ”the worst President in 8 long years.” Perhaps he meant “for 8 long years,” since he was the only President in the past 8 years, so Romero’s statement really didn’t make sense. (Sorry this is up a few days late - I lost me entire draft that I wrote the 1st time, and that took a few hours to do.) Anyway, watch the video, and I’ll discuss his statements below.
Another Perspective on the Auto Bailout « Republican Ranting
-
I came across a column by economist Thomas Sowell this morning entitled “Postponing Reality,” and I’d just like to discuss part of this column with you:
We are told that the collapse of the Big Three automakers in Detroit would have repercussions across the country, causing mass layoffs among firms that supply the automobile makers with parts, and shutting down automobile dealerships from coast to coast.
Michigan House of Representatives Votes 68-32 to Ban Texting While Driving « Republican Ranting

On December 4th, the Michigan House of Representatives voted on House Bill 5117, A bill to amend 1949 PA 300, entitled “Michigan vehicle code,” (MCL 257.1 to 257.923) by adding section 602b.
53% of Rescued Homeowners Still Not Paying Mortgages on Time « Republican Ranting
-
I was watching FOX News the other day, and Neil Cavuto the Great (yes, I’ve now given Cavuto the Republican Ranting honorary title of “the Great”) was discussing a bill before Congress that would help bankrupt homeowners restructure their mortgages. Cavuto discusses the issue with Wall Street Journal editorialist Steve Moore. Watch the video, and I’ll discuss it below
