Detroit City Council Session Turns Crazy: Complete with Racism and Hymn Singing « Republican Ranting
Well, if people already didn’t think that Detroit City officials were wacky, this is sure to change their mind. I heard about this driving home for spring break this weekend, and decided that I HAD to write something about this.

Live Analysis of Governor Granholm’s Michigan State of the State Address « Republican Ranting
-
The Michigan State of the State address is about to begin. I will be live blogging the event, giving my analysis (so my apologies for any spelling errors - I’ll fix them eventually).
Alright, she’s entering the chamber (I’m not sure if this is the House or Senate - probably House since it’s bigger).

Another Perspective on the Auto Bailout « Republican Ranting
-
I came across a column by economist Thomas Sowell this morning entitled “Postponing Reality,” and I’d just like to discuss part of this column with you:
We are told that the collapse of the Big Three automakers in Detroit would have repercussions across the country, causing mass layoffs among firms that supply the automobile makers with parts, and shutting down automobile dealerships from coast to coast.

The Problem with the Republican Party « Republican Ranting
-
So, I was taking a shower a couple days ago, when I had an epiphany (it’s where I always do all my great thinking). I came up with this phrase: “A tax-and-spend liberal is better than a tax-cut-and-spend conservative. At least the liberal can balance the budget.”

A Michigander’s Perspective: The Goverment Should Not Bail Out the Auto Industry « Republican Ranting
-
As rumors fly that a $25 billion bailout of the auto industry may actually come to a vote in the Congress, I figured that I, a citizen of Metro Detroit and Michigan should weigh in.
First, the facts:
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has called for “emergency and limited financial assistance” for General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler where legislation would be passed that would make the automakers eligible for financial support under the $700 billion bailout bill that was passed in October.

Federal Judge Orders Ohio Secretary of State to Purge Voter Rolls « Republican Ranting
-
Today, U.S. District Judge George C. Smith ruled in a suit filed by the Ohio Republican Party filed in September. He ruled that Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner (Dem) must adhere to the Help America Vote Act by matching newly registered voters’ information against the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles and/or Social Security Administration databases. She must alo tell the Board of Elections which voters’s registration info doesn’t match the databases. Brunner was also ordered to establish a process by which county election boards could do the sameSmith wrote in his ruling (unfortunately I can’t get the whole thing), “Plaintiffs assert, and the court agrees, that it is hard to imagine a public interest more compelling than safeguarding the legitimacy of the election of the president of the United States.”

Live: Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Pleading Guilty to Charges, Expected to Resign « Republican Ranting
-
This is happening live. Kwame Kilpatrick is about to plead guilty, and he’s expected to resign as Mayor of Detroit.
The judge (supposed to be Judge David Groner, but I never saw anything that said anything today confirming that’s who the judge was) is now informing him of what right’s he is giving up (trial by jury, being assumed innocent until proven guilty, being able to testify, being able to cross examine witnesses, appeal this case).
Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s Guilty Plea Postponed Until Tomorrow Morning « Republican Ranting
-
This is developing news coming out of Detroit right now. Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick had been expected to plead guilty to charges in the original text message scandal case at 5:15 P.M. EDT today before Judge Edward Ewell Jr., the presiding judge of the Criminal Division of Wayne County Circuit Court. Apparently the details of the plea deal hadn’t been completely ironed out by 5:15, so the decision was made to postpone the court appearance until 9:00 A.M. tomorrow, where he’ll appear in front of Judge David Groner.

Don’t Put Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick In Jail for Violating His Bond … « Republican Ranting
-
… because it’s just too dang funny to watch him violate his bond over and over again. But seriously, I would rather have him out of jail and committing more crimes, than kept in jail where he can’t commit any, and here’s why: I don’t trust Detroiters to remove him from office yet. The more crimes he commits, the more likely it is that he gets the boot, and as long as he’s not harming anybody right now, I say let him continue to violate his bond.

Sharon McPhail, Aide to Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Gets into Verbal Scuffle as She Ardently (and Obnoxiously) Defends Mayor « Republican Ranting
-
You know, every blogger at on point or another sees a story unfolding before him/her and thinks, “This is gonna make an incredible blog post,” and the news interview I saw today was exactly that. Watch the following interview between WDIV’s (NBC-4) Devin Scillian and former Councilwoman turned Mayoral candidate turned Mayoral aide:

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Jailed for Going to Canada « Republican Ranting
-
Well, Kwame Kilpatrick has been sent to jail, after it was revealed that he went to Windsor, Ontario for a business trip, violating his bond. Kwame apologized for the mistake in not telling the judge of the trip, saying, “I’ve been living in an incredible state of pressure and scrutiny.” He said that he had gone to Windsor to discuss the sale of the tunnel between the U.S. and Canada, saying, “We got the deal back on track. … It wasn’t a spur of the moment, willy nilly, I can frolic in Canada.”

I’m a Republican, And I’m Voting For a Tax for the Detroit Zoo « Republican Ranting
-
Well, this is a decision that wasn’t exactly easy for me to make, but now that I’ve made it, I’m confident that I made the right decision. I have decided that I will vote for the 0.1 mill to help fund the Detroit Zoo (a copy of the proposals can be found below). The zoo is located in Oakland County. The mill would be imposed for 10 years, from 2008 through 2017. If it passes, it is expected to raise a total of $14,968,031.11 if it passes in all 3 counties, as it is expected to.
Kansans, Michiganders, Missourians, and Georgians: Don’t Forget to Vote Today! « Republican Ranting
-
Michiganders, Kansans, Missourians, and Georgians, today is your primary election! I don’t know about you, but we’ve got lots of fun stuff to vote on down here in Wayne County (Michigan) (ok, not really, on the Republican side, there’s 2 contested races, but on the Democrats’ side it seems like there’s more candidates than voters; also, there’s a vote on a 0.1 mill for the Detroit Zoo)!

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Shoves a Cop Off a Porch, Faces Assault Charges « Republican Ranting
-
Well, the Kwame Kilpatrick scandal continues. Early last week, sheriff’s deputy Brian White was serving a subpoena to Bobby Ferguson, a friend of Kilpatrick’s. Kilpatrick threw White into his partner, Joann Kinney, and made a comment shaming her (a black woman) for working with a white man.

Teachers Sue Detroit Public Schools for Firing Them Illegally and Disobeying a Court Order « Republican Ranting

Here’s a story that I wanted to break last night, but because I only heard 2/3 of the story when the 2 teachers went on the radio, I decided to hold off until a newspaper article was printed, so I could catch the whole story.
The husband and wife teachers, Steve Conn and Heather Miller are suing the Detroit Public Schools (DPS)

Detroit to Crack Down on … Bicyclists? « Republican Ranting
-
Well, I heard about this from a co-worker yesterday, and I actually didn’t believe him until 3 other people chimed in and told me that it’s true (although they told me that the law was just passed) - apparently, Detroit (oh, well now we KNOW this will be good) has decided that they want to start enforcing some laws. Great! So, what laws? It’s a 1964 ordinance that requires bicycles to be registered, and violators will be slapped with a $55 fine. Police officers will start enforcement on August 7th.

Detroit News: Patriotism in Blogging, Specifically This Blog « Republican Ranting

So, yesterday, Catherine Jun, from the Detroit News, did an article about “Patriotism in Action.” Some of you may have noticed her comment on one of my posts, where she said she wanted to interview me.
Well, she did, and it appeared as the last segment of the article, available on the Detroit News’ site.

Some Black Republicans May Vote for Obama Because of Race « Republican Ranting
-
So, a few days ago, the Associated Press came out with a story about some black Republicans selling out their beliefs just to “VOTE FOR A BLACK MAN!!!” Personally, I think this is despicable and racist, and it would be just as bad as Jesse Jackson voting for Alan Keyes just to get a black man elected.
How are we supposed to fulfill the “goal” of electing an African American, ending race, if we’re VOTING BASED ON RACE?!?! It just appalls me that these people are so shallow.
