D.C. Voting Rights Act is Clearly Unconstitutional « Republican Ranting

Last Thursday, the Senate passed the District of Columbia House Voting Rights Act of 2009, which gives the District of Columbia a voting member in the House of Representatives and eliminates the position of D.C. Delegate, who represents the District now. Currently, that delegate, Eleanor Holmes Norton, can only vote when her vote does not affect the outcome; however, she is allowed to introduce bills, and this bill was introduced by Norton. The bill would also give an additional seat to Utah, so that the partisan makeup of the House stayed the same.

Obama Bitter that Republicans Rejected the Stimulus Package? « Republican Ranting

  • So, I was just watching the news, and they were talking about a picture and caption of the White House website. Neil Cavuto (FOX News) was asking if the following caption was a cheap shot at Republicans. Here’s the picture (I’ll discuss it below and ask for your opinion) (see here for the original picture; it’s picture 4: http://www.whitehouse.gov/photogallery/The-story-of-the-economic-recovery-package/):

A Normal Day in the Senate: Economic Stimulus, Health Care … Pornography at the National Science Foundation? « Republican Ranting

  • Alright, so I was watching the Senate discuss more amendments to H.R. 1, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the latest economic stimulus bill. Anyway, Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) was talking about his amendment and some health care stuff, when all of a sudden, he breaks off on to the subject of pornography being viewed at work by some of the staff at the National Science Foundation, and that we need to make sure that stimulus money isn’t going towards wasting time at work (whether that’s pornography or not - people should be doing work at work, not viewing pornography or playing Free Cell). Here’s that video clip, courtesy of C-SPAN

The UAW Put the Auto Industry in the Position that It’s in Now « Republican Ranting

  • Today, I saw a TV interview that has confirmed what I’ve been saying for years (see the long paragraph in the middle). The UAW has driven the auto industry down into a disastrous spiral. Watch theses videos. The first is an ad put out by the Employee Freedom Action Committee (EFAC), and the second is an interview with EFAC representative Rick Berman (done by Neil Cavuto):

Federal Judge Orders Ohio Secretary of State to Purge Voter Rolls « Republican Ranting

  • Today, U.S. District Judge George C. Smith ruled in a suit filed by the Ohio Republican Party filed in September. He ruled that Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner (Dem) must adhere to the Help America Vote Act by matching newly registered voters’ information against the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles and/or Social Security Administration databases. She must alo tell the Board of Elections which voters’s registration info doesn’t match the databases. Brunner was also ordered to establish a process by which county election boards could do the sameSmith wrote in his ruling (unfortunately I can’t get the whole thing), “Plaintiffs assert, and the court agrees, that it is hard to imagine a public interest more compelling than safeguarding the legitimacy of the election of the president of the United States.”

Live Analysis of the Senate Vote on the New Bailout Bill: Bill Passes « Republican Ranting

  • Alright, so I’ve been watching C-SPAN throughout the day as much as I could, and saw everything from the US-India nuclear agreement and the Amtrak bill to the discussion on the Financial Industry Bailout bill. They’ll be voting on that next, and I’ll be live blogging as they vote, whether it looks like it’ll pass or fail. The rumor is that it’s expected to pass the 60-vote threshold, since they added some tax cut packages; however, these packages were rejected earlier in the week by the house, so it may clear the Senate, but fail the House by more than H.R. 3997 did.

McCain Asks Obama, Debate Commission to Postpone Debate Due to Economic Crisis « Republican Ranting

  • Today, John McCain issued the following statement regarding the economic crisis:
    Remarks on the Economic Crisis
    September 24, 2008
America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.

Ron Paul on Bailouts: “We Are Headed for a Rough Ride” « Republican Ranting

  • The following is Representative Ron Paul’s (R-TX) statements regarding government bailouts of financial institutions, with my analysis sprinkled throughout his comments:
Many Americans today are asking themselves how the economy got to be in such a bad spot.

Obama and McCain Respond to Takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac « Republican Ranting

  • Well, I already talked about the Federal takeover of Fannie and Freddie, and since then, I was able to find statements from the Presidential candidates. We’ll start with Barack Obama:
Originally, this was all we had from Obama:
I have been and will continue to monitor this situation closely, and I’ll evaluate whatever plan is put forth by this administration with the following three benchmarks:

Federal Government Takes Over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac « Republican Ranting

  • Well, as of this afternoon, it’s official: the 2 mortgage giants, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, will be placed in conservatorship under the supervision of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). Under this plan, the federal government will temporarily run Fannie and Freddie until the 2 companies become more stable.

Noose Student at Central Michigan University Will Not Be Charged With Ethnic Intimidation « Republican Ranting

  • This is breaking news - I just heard about it from the CM-Life.
Isabella County Prosecutor Larry Burdick has said that he will not be pressing charges against the 28-year-old male engineering student who hung a noose in the Industrial Educational Technology Building back in November. (My previous posts on this subject can be found here, here, here, here, and here).

McCain Changes His Mind on Mortgage Plan - Now He Wants to “Help” Homeowners « Republican Ranting

  • Well, in a move that honestly shocked me, John McCain has outlined a Mortgage/Homeowner plan, contrary to earlier statements that he made, saying, “I believe the role of government is to help the truly needy. … Reforms should focus on improving transparency and accountability in our capital markets. … What is not necessary is a multibillion-dollar bailout for big banks and speculators, as Senators Clinton and Obama have proposed”:

Central Michigan Officials Unable to Confirm/Deny Penalty for Noose Student « Republican Ranting

  • OK, so the Central Michigan Life did a story in response to my recent blog post and I just wanted to keep you updated on the situation.
The CM-Life asked for a statement from the university concerning the leak, and Tony Voisin, Director of Student Life, said, “It would be a problem for that person to be leaking information to the media.”

Leaked Info: Noose Student at Central Michigan Suspended « Republican Ranting

  • I received the following information from a Central Michigan University faculty member (read here for my previous post on this: http://inkslwc.wordpress.com/2008/03/17/what-ever-happened-to-the-noose-student-at-cmu/):
CMU has kicked the student out until Aug. 1, 2008. The student (a white male senior … not a black guy trying to generate sympathy for “his cause,” as some have suggested)), will take

Why the Economic Stimulus Package Was a Terrible Idea « Republican Ranting

  • Alright, so I was looking around Senator Chuck Hagel’s (R-NE) website to see about his new book, and I stumbled across this press release:
Hagel Statement on Vote Against Senate Economic Stimulus Package

February 7th, 2008 - U.S. Senator Chuck Hagel issued the following statement today after voting against the passed United States Senate economic stimulus package:“In the last few years we have overbuilt, overmortgaged, overleveraged and abused credit. The market is now self-correcting.“

New York Governor Eliot Spitzer Linked to Prostitution Ring « Republican Ranting

  • Well, today hasn’t been a good day for New York Governor Eliot Spitzer (Democrat). He’s just made a speech apologizing and not saying much else about 20 minutes ago, after allegations that he was connected to a prostitution ring, Emporers Club VIP, came out today. He was caught on a federal wiretap that was trying to bust a prostitution ring.

Central Michigan University Violated State Law in Dennis Lennox’s Hearing « Republican Ranting

  • For the background on this particular case, see my post here http://inkslwc.wordpress.com/2008/02/29/central-michigan-postpones-dennis-lennoxs-disciplinary-hearing-yet-again/. After that hearing, Lennox accused the University of violating the Open Meetings Act (OMA), Act 267 of 1976 (Michigan Compiled Laws [MCL], Chapter 15), specifically Section 15.268:
    Sec. 8.
A public body may meet in a closed session only for the following purposes:

Dennis Lennox Files Complaint Against CMU Faculty « Republican Ranting

  • Dennis Lennox (go read any of my previous posts on him for context), claims (the University has not confirmed this yet) that he filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Education, claiming that 3 Central Michigan University professors violated the rights guaranteed to him under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. The allegations come in response to e-mails exchanged between faculty in the English department after they were leaked to Chetly Zarko at OusideLansing.com by an English professor who was “disgusted by the behavior of these professors.”
