Enterprise Software is Not Dead Yet - VentureBlog
If you can credibly argue that a customer's increased profits will exceed the price it will pay for the software, purchasing the software should be a no brainer. Supply Chain and CRM software were sold on a similar efficiency story in the late 90's and early 2000's and, in many instances, continue to drive significant ROI for those customers who adopted them early.
Trends: Enterprise 2.0 Conference wrap up
Which brings me to the next big theme: adoption. Many enterprises are struggling with employee adoption of social tools. So, this prompts me to ask -- perhaps unfairly -- what about the whole idea of "emergence"? Aren't these tools so cool, so fun, so essential to modern work, that they will sweep through the enterprise in a groundswell held back only by your troglodyte executives? It turns out that many social computing efforts are actually championed by C-level executives. This led several observers at the conference to blame power-hoarding middle managers for poor adoption. Maybe that's the case in some enterprises, but as a generalization it feels trite to me.
In fact, this whole debate reminds me of all the talk circa 2004 about getting better Intranet adoption. Enterprises had invested in pricey portal systems that employees rarely bothered to visit. Intranet managers learned over time to provide useful services that ease employees' daily tasks. Often what employees really wanted was a single simple application, like an online org chart. There's a lesson there.
McKinsey: What Matters: Innovation: What's your score?
Looking at past economic downturns, such as the burst of the dot-com bubble, we found that top innovators continued to outperform their peers even during the tough times. | There may be an optimum level of innovation. Companies with the lowest innovation performance clearly suffered in the market. However the players that have the very highest IPS aren’t always rewarded proportionally in terms of higher TRS. So, while companies must make sure that they are well-positioned in the innovation game, it’s unclear whether being a distant leader pays off in higher TRS. We are still working on this intriguing question.
IndustryWeek : Innovation 101: Whirlpool's Spin on Innovation

BCG Innovation 2009 - Making Hard Decisions in the Downturn

Enterprise 2.0 as a part of the Global Enterprise | Bertrand DUPERRIN's Notepad
Many questioning about enterprise 2.0 these last weeks. How to make it work, how help companies to understand it, how to calculate the ROI ? So many questions that, at the end, can be summed up in only one : undestranding how these new logics can integrate into the existing and add to it. Without that, it’s obvious that either companies don’t dare either they will dare with overcautiousness and won’tbe able to get the most from their initiative, either will dare in a bad way and things will be counter-productives.
Determining the ROI of Enterprise 2.0 | Enterprise Web 2.0 | ZDNet.com
Despite recent statistics showing that Enterprise 2.0 tools have spread to about a third of businesses globally, there remain ongoing questions being asked in the enterprise software community about the real returns that they provide to businesses that deploy them.
Enterprise Collaboration at Scale - Ideo on designing collaborative systems
Most organizations think about technology first:
* Blogs
* Wikis
* Crowdsourcing
* Social Networking
* Telepresence
* Real-Time Collaboration software
The issue is that ROI does not appear because of other factors:
* Rewards
* Culture
* Organization Design
* Knowledge Sharing
* Content
* Achieving Adoption
* Abilities
* Systems Design
Design Thinking: Starts and ends with individuals
* Culture
* Behaviors
* Motivations
* Social Interactions
Internet Evolution - The Big Report - Can Enterprise Social Networking Pay Off?
These apps aim to provide value in three ways. First, they can bridge geographical and organizational information divisions by moving conversations out of email and hallways and into shared spaces such as blogs and wikis. This way, information becomes searchable, serendipitous connections are made, and ideas pollinate in ways they couldn’t before. Communities of interest spring up around subject matter rather than organizational hierarchies. For instance, a hardware engineer in Ireland who experiments with open-source software in his spare time could link to a blog on Linux started by a software developer in Australia. Even though the hardware engineer isn’t part of the software development team, he could follow discussions and share ideas, some of which the dev team may find useful.

Social software ROI :: Blog :: Headshift
"No business case will sell social software to a firm that doesn't already value collaboration in its culture."
However, an ROI can be used to get a social software project approved.

The Bamboo Project Blog: But Do They Work?
* 52% of organizations that adopt blogs, wikis, and social networking tools (among others) achieved best-in-class performance levels compared to 5% for those that didn’t.
* The same tools were used within organizations that achieved an 18% year-over-year improvement in employee engagement. Companies that didn’t use these tools grew engagement by a mere 1%. (An aside--not sure how "employee engagement" was measured).

Operating within Connect, the new enterprise portal infrastructure, Sainsbury’s created a series of functionally aligned knowledge management sub-portals in such areas as product development, call centers, retail stores, supply chain, etc. The product development group served as the pilot, starting an “Idea Bank” to improve the new product development process. They were able to reduce departmental silos and became better able collect new product ideas from those with direct customer contact. Reduced time to market and increased market successes were the result.
