Education Summit Report.pdf (application/pdf Object)
The impetus for the summit came in response to an increased public interest in neuroscience research and how it might
inform the teaching/learning process. Brain science is a key element in the rich milieu of knowledge contributing to the
science of learning. Future research and efforts to translate it and communicate findings for use in practical settings by the
education community and others must occur as a multidisciplinary effort.
Successful translation and application of brain science research for use in practical settings has inspired new areas of focus
such as neuroethics and neuroeconomics. Like other professionals, educators are eager to harness and decipher findings in
neuroscience and related disciplines to inform the design of instructional strategies and learning environments whether it be
a school classroom or informal educational setting. With research advances in areas such as memory, attention, and stress,
information about how people learn is becoming readily available and educators are eager to translate it for their use.

Welcome | Teaching Copyright
There's a lot of misinformation out there about legal rights and responsibilities in the digital era.
This is especially disconcerting when it comes to information being shared with youth. Kids and teens are bombarded with messages from a myriad of sources that using new technology is high-risk behavior. Downloading music is compared to stealing a bicycle — even though many downloads are lawful. Making videos using short clips from other sources is treated as probably illegal — even though many such videos are also lawful.
This misinformation is harmful, because it discourages kids and teens from following their natural inclination to be innovative and inquisitive. The innovators, artists and voters of tomorrow need to know that copyright law restricts many activities but also permits many others. And they need to know the positive steps they can take to protect themselves in the digital sphere. In short, youth don't need more intimidation — what they need is solid, accurate information.
EFF's Teaching Copyright curriculum was created to help teachers present the laws surrounding digital rights in a balanced way.
Teaching Copyright provides lessons and ideas for opening your classroom up to discussion, letting your students express their ideas and concerns, and then guiding your students toward an understanding of the boundaries of copyright law.

Tom Chapin - Not On The Test
Why this song?
As a kid who grew up in NYC, I am a great fan of America’s public education. I attended P.S. 41 in Greenwich Village, then P. S. 8 in Brooklyn Heights, then on to Brooklyn Technical High School and S.U.N.Y. Plattsburgh.
And now, as a father and a grandfather, I so appreciate the tough job that faces every teacher. I believe they need all the help they can get: anything that excites a student, opens their eyes, and hearts and minds is a positive that makes a child invest in school.
Music, art, drama and sports - these are what kept me involved when I was in school. And these very things, that make a teacher’s (and student’s) job easier and more rewarding, are what’s been cut from curriculums across the country.
Now we are teaching by rote again - where the test, and only the test, becomes the reason to teach and study.
It’s no secret that American industry has outsourced most factory jobs to other countries to take advantage of cheaper labor costs. So why are we putting so much effort into a form of education in which there is no creativity? This is the time that our youth should be taught to think ”out of the box,” not be put into a tighter one!
This is the larger context that John Forster and I wanted to address in a satirical song for NPR’s “Morning Edition.”
-Tom Chapin

Not On The Test
by John Forster & Tom Chapin

Go on to sleep now, third grader of mine.
The test is tomorrow but you'll do just fine.
It's reading and math, forget all the rest.
You don't need to know what is not on the test.
Each box that you mark on each test that you take,
Remember your teachers, their jobs are at stake.
Your score is their score, but don't get all stressed.
They'd never teach anything not on the test.
The School Board is faced with no child left behind
With rules but no funding, they’re caught in a bind.
So music and art and the things you love best
Are not in your school ‘cause they’re not on the test.
Sleep, sleep, and as you

Students tap into technology - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
"Learning is changing," said Georgia Teppert, principal at Greater Latrobe Senior High School. "We can no longer just deliver a lecture and expect all the kids to get it."
Coleman put it more bluntly.
"This is where education is going," he said. "If you don't do it, you're going to get left in the dust."
