Twitter StreamGraphs
"A StreamGraph is shown for the latest 1000 tweets which contain the search word. The default search query is 'data visualization' but a new one can be typed into the text box at the top of the application. You can also enter a Twitter ID preceded by the '@' symbol to see the latest tweets from that user. A parameter to the URL can be used to specify the initial search word. For example, use http://www.neoformix.com/Projects/TwitterStreamGraphs/view.php?q=coffee to see the latest tweets about coffee. "

China News: “Mr. Hu Jintao, Tear Down the Great Firewall!” (Updated with Video) | China Digital Times (CDT)
"To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, KulturProjekte Berlin set up a virtual “Berlin Twitter Wall” where individuals could post their thoughts on the occasion through use of a Twitter hashtag #FOTW. The site’s introduction further invites participants to “let us know which walls still have to come down to make our world a better place!” Chinese netizens have made their voices heard on this last point, and Chinese comments bashing the Great Firewall and Internet censorship now dominate the site. Selections of these comments are translated by CDT below:"

Killing straw men
"Paul Carr’s main point appears to be that citizen journalists can’t get stuff right, so they should shut up, and those that record events instead of helping to save lives should be ripped a new one. Yet his main assertions are unsupported by the facts, his interpretation riddled with holes and his straw men pathetically easy to demolish.
There are interesting debates to be had about technology, social media, citizen journalism and eye witness accounts, but sadly Carr’s post touches on none of them in any meaningful way. I am befuddled as to why people on Twitter are seizing on it as breaking new ground, as it simply doesn’t. "

4 Ways News Organizations are Using Twitter Lists
"Though Twitter Lists are new to most users, some news organizations are trying to stay ahead of the curve by taking advantage of the new feature and implementing it quickly. Whether by creating staff directories to make their journalists easier to find, or recommending tweeps to follow on specific subjects, Twitter lists are giving news sites the ability to curate news and further open up to Twitter users that can help them to gather news. Social Media Influence Elections, Not Laws - Digital Life Blog - InformationWeek
"We've seen how social media like Twitter and Facebook can be used as part of a winning election strategy, but the same tools don't seem to influence elected officials or public policy.
Maybe it's because elected officials are rarely on Facebook or Twitter themselves -- those posts you see are from their proxies. Or maybe there's something different about the dynamic when it comes to generating momentum for or against a given law -- it's easier to get excited about a person than a law -- but there's also more fragmentation in cyberspace.
What I mean is, it's pretty easy to coalesce electronic activity -- both for and against -- around a particular candidate. Particularly when a social-media-savvy manager is running a campaign, it's fairly easy to ensure that the "official" Facebook page or Twitter account gets all the hits.
But it’s very different with issues, even big ones, because no one owns an issue the same way a campaign manager owns a candidate. "
Twitalyzer Firefox Add-On for Twitter.com
"If you're using Firefox, and why wouldn't you be, and you use the Twitter.com site or Twitter Search then you're going to love our experimental Firefox add-on! Installing the add-on in gives you a Twitalyze! button that, when clicked, uses the Twitalyzer API to score everyone you're in communication with.
If Twitalyzer knows the Tweet author's influence score we will provide that information and tell you how long ago we took the measurement. If we don't know the author we'll let you know that too!

Twitter Serves Up Ideas From Its Users - NYTimes.com
"Twitter’s smart enough, or lucky enough, to say, ‘Gee, let’s not try to compete with our users in designing this stuff, let’s outsource design to them,’ ” said Eric von Hippel, head of the innovation and entrepreneurship group at the Sloan School of Management at M.I.T. and author of the book “Democratizing Innovation.”
Economists have long thought that producers — the people making products and running companies — are naturally the ones coming up with new ideas, Professor von Hippel said. In fact, he said, consumers often come up with ideas for products, and companies wait on the sidelines to see if they have mass appeal.
Technology companies have been the most active in relying on others to innovate for them. This is in large part because the Internet lets people exchange ideas easily and rapidly with large groups, and computing tools let people design new products cheaply.
The photo-sharing site Flickr started as a small part of a big online game. When the founders realized that the photo-sharing feature was more popular than the game, they scrapped the game and built Flickr. Open-source software companies leave innovation up to users, and companies like Bug Labs let people build their own hardware. "
TweetMyPaper
What if we wrote our papers, stories, and poetry the way that we text our friends?
TweetMyPaper allows you to do this by
assembling your documents (line by line) in 140 character bursts.
Beware!
It isn't easy to write when you can't go backwards!
I still don't get it!
OK, look at it this way.
In school they taught you to edit and revise and be very careful to craft the perfect paper.
Real life interpersonal communication has taught you that it's ok to just shout out your ideas line by line. This marries the two.
Can you learn to write your papers the way you talk to your friends?"
Education Week: Twitter Lessons in 140 Characters or Less
"The Twitter feed for Lucas Ames’ class in American history has shown some lively exchanges of ideas and opinions among students at the Flint Hill School. One day this month, 11th graders at the private school in Oakton, Va., shared articles on the separation of church and state, pondered the persistence of racism, and commented on tobacco regulation in Virginia now and during the Colonial period—all in the required Twitter format of 140 or fewer characters. "
Newsletter - Issue 17 - Twittering the student experience
"If all you knew about Twitter was what you heard in the media, you might think it was populated only by chattering celebrities. While intellectually barren corners of Twitter may exist, for us, Twitter is a powerful personal research tool, populated by carefully selected individuals whom we have chosen to 'follow' for their knowledge and insight. Twitter (twitter.com) is a free online service that allows users to post short messages ('tweets') of up to 140 characters describing their current status, and allows them to 'follow' the updates of other selected users. Unlike a Google search, which will only suggest links related to the terms searched, a question posted via Twitter usually yields a range of replies, from shortened URLs containing answers to the question to more intelligent responses. For example, when Professor Martin Weller asked on Twitter "What are the key components of a viral idea?", he received a wide range of replies (summarized here: tinyurl.com/kkqfs6). Similarly, a tweeted remark I made during a seminar on creativity turned into an online discussion on the subject (summarized in this video: vimeo.com/1362359). These examples are hardly characteristic of trivial thought processes, yet when we try to persuade colleagues of the value of building a personal network via Twitter, the most common response is, 'Why do I want to know what someone else had for breakfast?'.

Is Google/Microsoft/Twitter in the news business? (Scripting News)
"And what business are they in now? I believe they're in the news business. This isn't tech anymore. This is what the Times and CNN should have become, what CBS, NBC and ABC should be. What Jay calls a pro-am system where everyone collaborates to create the realtime stream of news on all levels, national, international, local, broad coverage and specialized stuff. Everything from newsletters to nightly news. Everything flows through the same pipes, and curators pick off the good stuff and route it to people who are interested. This is the way news is done from here-on. We're not talking about the future, we're talking about now."
