Midlife Mastery Journal: Life Is Coming At You - Are You Ready?
The only constant is change, yet we get a strange sense of (false) security from handling only those issues right under our noses. Not a good idea.
The Mystique of the New
Knowing where you're going is critical; not only so that you can effectively steer your course but even more so to know when you've arrived.
-
After all, you've now lived half your life, and you've learned a thing or two over these four or five decades, haven't you? You've made some mistakes and now, you think, it's time to put all that practical knowledge to work: out with the old, and in with the new!
What Will Your Next Career Look Like?
Job security? Retirement? Dream on! No matter whether you're currently employed or not, you've got another career in your future: count on it!
-
If you want my recommendation on the subject: forget about retiring. Regardless of whether you're currently employed, facing a layoff, or already 'semi-retired', there's a very high probability that there's yet another career in your future.
Is The Man in the Mirror a Fraud?
When the midlife transition hits men, the whole family may be thrown into chaos without really understanding why. The 'man in charge' is probably more baffled than anyone.
-
If your household was once quiet, peaceful and loving, but now has (almost overnight) seems to have become a violent contest of wills, it may not be they who have changed — it may very well be you. The ones you love may be the mirror in which you're seeing your own reflection: the reflection of a person you may not want to meet face-to-face.
Xenophobia and You
If fear lies at the root of every midlife crisis (and it does), then what steps must we take to defeat it? Overcoming cultural bias is a primary strategy.
-
Whether you experience that transition in terms of fear or excitement — whether your focus is on what you may be leaving behind or what you're about to gain — will determine, to a great extent, the ease and, ultimately, the success of your transition.
Finding Peace with Yourself
Men and women both have the same opportunities to achieve true maturity. Though it's more difficult for men to make that transition, success offers them even greater capacity for joy out of the contrast.
-
At some point during a successful midlife transition, your guides and directors (your superego, the voice of your parents, teachers, mentors and friends) your superiors and law-enforcers all have to fall silent.
Life Is Change (Stagnation Equals Death)
The "pursuit of happiness" is an exercise in chasing your tail. Midlife teaches you that happiness is what you experience in pursuit of your destiny.
-
I want to challenge you to take another look at 'security'. Once you accept that your destiny is a dynamic concept, you'll soon recognize that any definition of 'security' that makes it a static point in time or a changeless goal distorts it.
Exit Plan or Shot In The Dark?
Have a great job that you love? Have a lousy job that you hate? Before you have no job at all, you need to know where you want to go and plan for it: not later, NOW.
-
Regardless of how well you love what you do, so long as you survive, you're assuredly not going to stay in that job forever. Life is risk; but the more you're able to address and lower that risk, the more successful you'll become.
Vision Correction as a Metaphor for Midlife
As you get older, things tend to get fuzzy and you need to get your eyes examined and to accept help to fix your vision. The same thing happens in midlife.
-
Once I accepted the fact (years ago) that my vision would change over time, I also came to accept the fact that I needed help with it. I accepted the corrective lenses and the necessity for regular check ups. The same should be said for midlife.
Can You Win the Uphill Midlife Battle?
The more some people try to cope with midlife issues, the harder it seems to make any headway. What's left? To chuck it all? To give up? Isn't there another option?
-
The classical midlife crisis scenario is so avoidable. If you are frustrated facing the challenges of the midlife transition, let me assure you that the solution consists in a simple (but not easy) two-step process: 1) understand and accept the nature of change, and 2) change your mind.
The Balance Beam: Prayers That Are Always Answered
Prayer can be a touchy subject, often because it is so easily misunderstood. Once we can connect with its essence, its essential role in life becomes clear.
The Balance Beam: The Courage to Change the Things I Can
We're appalled when people stand by doing nothing while others suffer, yet, if we haven't got a habit of courage, we're likely to be doing the same thing.
The Balance Beam: Jump Out Before the Water Boils
Destructive change happens gradually and under the weight of authority. Constructive change is radical and requires the courage to buck the current. What's your choice?
The Balance Beam: Beyond Change to Metanoia
An inscrutable Zen saying counsels followers to 'kill the Buddha.' Perhaps it's time to learn that the real Buddha is within you.
The Balance Beam: Mahatma Gandhi Is a Fan of Mine
If anyone wants to know a sure-fire method of changing the world, all he or she needs to do is to study Mahatma Gandhi. The message couldn't be clearer.
The Balance Beam: Leading the Cultural Evolution
The universe is neither random nor eternal, but evolving. Humankind evolves with it, and we have appropriate cultural choices to make.
The Balance Beam: Human Sacrifice in 2008
Ideologies can do a tremendous amount of damage, not only by promoting conformity over diversity, but especially by sacrificing individuals to a theoretical 'groupthink'.
