From the Desk of David Pogue - The Culture of the Internet - NYTimes.com
What, exactly, is the syllabus for Internet culture? What are the videos and memes do you have to know to qualify as a Web-savvy person?
The "Star Wars" kid, of course. The Exploding Whale. The Mentos and Coke video, probably. "Where the Hell is Matt," for sure. Dancing Baby.
So I asked my Twitter followers to supply a list. Their suggestions poured forth for hours, numbering in the hundreds.
To save you a lot of scrolling, I'll just pass along a couple of links that they suggested. First, at least one person has carefully compiled a list of the 99 videos he thinks you need for a basic education (as he puts it, "unless you're a loser or old or something"): www.youshouldhaveseenthis.com.

Announcing the Top 10 TEDTalks
With 50 million views since we started posting video two years ago, TEDTalks have become a powerful cultural force.
To celebrate this milestone, we're releasing a never-before-seen list: the Top 10 TEDTalks of all time, as of June 2008.
With speakers like neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor and global health expert Hans Rosling, the list proves one of the compelling ideas behind TEDTalks: that an unknown speaker with a powerful idea can reach -- and move -- a global audience through the power of quality web video. Links to all 10 talks are found below the video window -- or browse through our Top 10 TEDTalks Theme. Even if you've seen them all, the highlights video below is darn fun.

VisualHub updates with iPhone support - The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)
-
And so it begins - with the release of yet another Apple product that has anything to do with media playback, software developers are beginning to release software updates that account for the new functionality. VisualHub, a TUAW favorite for its exceptional video conversion and batch encoding abilities, has released a new version with support for encoding to iPhone video formats. As you can see, the slider labels change slightly when selecting the iPhone option, giving users a choice between qualities like EDGE, Tiny, WiFi and of course, High and Go Nuts. In addition, using the EDGE or Tiny presets will also create FastStart videos that are optimized for streaming; this is ideal for content providers who want to open their doors to the unprecedented rush (thanks, Daring Fireball) of new iPhone owners.
As usual, a demo of VisualHub is available, while an invaluable license costs a mere $23.32.

One is a novelty. Two are a coincidence. But three (and possibly in a few hours, four) make for a trend. So there is a new trend: exclusive, often expensive, high-level conferences that give away world-class speeches for free as online videos. Not just live videostreams and archives -- that has been the case for a while now at many conferences -- but edited and curated versions that can be watched online or downloaded into a laptop or an iPod or a cell phone and subscribed to via RSS.

35mm vs IMAX Resolution
Interesting comparislon between the resolution of a 35 mm frame and an IMAX frame. simple and clearly stated.
-
Hello my name is Tristan Pipo and I am just a general huge fan of movies and the technology behind the film. I was doing some research of the standard 35mm film that we see in movie theaters and did a little research and I heard that they have approx 4000 lines of resolution on a typical movie. I was wondering what the number of lines that would be approx. in a typical frame of IMAX film.
I can understand that is a lot of down conversion between the 4000 lines of a standard film to DVD which is 480p on a high end system. I was just wondering if you could pass that data along to me because I just like knowing those kind of details.
