Neven Mrgan's web apps for iPhone

  • Here's a simple way to use your iPhone for a little more than passing time by talking to friends while strolling down the aisle. Just browse on over to OneTrip.org and check off items as you add them to your cart. Add new ones from a list of common items with just a tap, or type in that one herb we forgot to put on the list - OneTrip will remember it for next time you shop for the same thing.

OneTrip's iPod-like interface is made for speed and convenience. It keeps a running count of items left to buy, and it shows them color-coded and sorted by store section. The whole page only needs to load once - after that, it doesn't matter if you lose your Internet connection in the mall. As long as the page stays open you can add and remove items all you want. They'll be stored in a cookie, ready for use next time you visit OneTrip.

10 day survival pack for your vehicle for just $25 by Jeffrey Yago, P.E., CEM Issue #104

  • This article talks about earthquake supplies for your car that you can buy in a supermarket.  There are some good ideas here that provide some variety with the stuff I already have.  It also says a change of clothes, which I don't have, and toilet tissue - which is a great idea!

  • When it comes to stored emergency food, you want meals that are easy to prepare, use little or no cooking equipment, and tastes good. Since you could be injured or trapped, you want to keep it very simple. You may have limited trunk space and may have to carry this emergency food supply some distance if you must leave your vehicle, so you want to keep its size and weight to a minimum. This means you need to buy foods that are highly concentrated and only require hot water to prepare.

There are many drink mixes and dehydrated food packs that are inexpensive and can be found in any large grocery store, although they are not actually advertised or sold as emergency or camping supplies. Be sure to check all expiration dates and purchase only the newest stock. Most of these recommended products can provide good nutrition and taste variety over many days. The packaged meals I am recommending are sold in individual moisture-proof foil pouches and require only a cup of very hot water to reconstitute into a tasty hot meal that will serve two people.

LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING - 'King' Gets Royal Treatment in Extended DVD (washingtonpost.com)

This is one of the Lord of the Rings movies - apparently a truly outstanding DVD. Will be extremely useful for class.

  • The extended editions of the three "Rings" films, all of which were released as follow-ups to the less-comprehensive DVDs of the theatrical versions, easily count among the finest, most meticulously crafted DVD sets ever made. It might seem that only Tolkien freaks and hairy-footed Hobbit geeks would care about all of this Smeagol-study. But anyone who considers himself a student of cinema will be engrossed by the exhaustive documentaries included here. In fact, I find the making of these movies just as fascinating as the movies themselves. So what exactly is included?

Documentaries about practically every aspect of the production, including the screenplay's adaptation, visual effects, costume design, principal photography, sound and more; production photos; a profile of young filmmaker Cameron Duncan, a friend of director Peter Jackson's who inspired the Oscar-winning "King" song, "Into the West"; a documentary about "Rings" author J.R.R. Tolkien; and four full-length commentary tracks from the director and writers, design team, production team and members of the cast. Nary a moment of the filmmaking process has been left uncaptured, which means fans literally serve as flies on the wall for many private moments, from cast and crew parties to Elijah Wood's final take, after which Jackson steps from behind the camera to tearfully embrace his trusted Frodo.

THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS - A 'Battle' to Remember (washingtonpost.com)

The Battle of Algiers is a must have for the politics and film class. Also for anything about Iraq or terrorism.

  • If you want to see a sobering, ultra-realistic look at war in an occupied territory, skip the "Fahrenheit 9/11" DVD and pick up "The Battle of Algiers." Considered required viewing by film buffs and political scholars ("Algiers" was screened at the Pentagon in spring 2003 to prepare officials for what might occur in Iraq), the 1966 movie from Italian director Gillo Pontecorvo remains remarkably relevant. Sadly, when it comes to terrorism and resolving international conflicts, little has changed in the past 38 years.

Gillo Pontecorvo's "The Battle of Algiers" -- a realistic look at the struggle for Algerian independence -- has been given a deluxe DVD treatment by the Criterion Collection. (British Film Institute, Rialto Pictures)

The Criterion Collection, known for taking great care with its DVD releases, has given this fictionalized account of Algeria's struggle for independence an appropriately classy three-disc DVD filled with more than four hours of special features. This is one of those rare occasions where the bonus material is integral to understanding the historical and cultural importance of the movie at hand.

The highlights are the brand new docs prepared exclusively for this release: "Marxist Poetry: The Making of 'The Battle of Algiers,'" a 51-minute feature that includes recent interviews with Pontecorvo and producer-military leader Saadi Yacef; "Five Directors," which
