U.S.C. Film School’s New Look Is Historic - NYTimes.com

Mr. Lucas, an architectural hobbyist, laid out the original designs for the project and donated an initial $175 million to build and support it. Industry benefactors like Warner Brothers, Fox and the Walt Disney Company have contributed another $50 million.

About $50 million still must be raised — in the face of hard times, even for Hollywood — to equip a second phase that would include a 36,000-square-foot animation building. Nonetheless school officials said that construction is fully paid for and was scheduled to be finished by August 2010.

For Mr. Lucas the grand expansion — which serves a full-time enrollment of about 1,500 graduate and undergraduate cinema students, along with thousands who take an occasional class — is all about sending a message.

“The only way you are going to get respect on a college campus, or a university campus, is to build something that is important,” Mr. Lucas said of his reasons for backing the complex. “Schools and universities mainly understand money.”

Spruce Up Quicksilver With New Interfaces | MacApper

  • The oft mentioned Quicksilver from the awesome folks at Blacktree Software is arguably one of my favorite apps on my entire Leopard MacBook Pro. The sheer simplicity, intuitiveness, and function of this remarkable app allows me to work more productively than ever; launching an app, controlling something, or finding something is just a keyboard shortcut away. However, some of the built-in appearances that ship with Quicksilver when you download can leave much to be desired, especially when running on the shiny new Leopard desktop. Here’s a bunch of new appearances to change that up.

The first thing to note is that Quicksilver’s built-in plug in menu installation tool has a bunch of other appearances that you can easily install and get going with. However, there are more than just those standard ones that you can use and they can really make your Quicksilver installation look that much more appealing, and I’m going to show you a couple of my favorites today.

My number one interface for Quicksilver right now is BezelHUD from Julius Eckert. This incredibly clean and simple interface has a nice gradient and cool animation when you invoke and hide Quicksilver. It’s just nice looking

Bone marrow treatments restore nerves, expert says - Yahoo! News

BETHESDA, Maryland (Reuters) - An experiment that went wrong may provide a new way to treat multiple sclerosis, a Canadian researcher said on Tuesday.

Patients who got bone marrow stem-cell transplants -- similar to those given to leukemia patients -- have enjoyed a mysterious remission of their disease.

And Dr. Mark Freedman of the University of Ottawa is not sure why.

"Not a single patient, and it's almost seven years, has ever had a relapse," Freedman said.
