Pre-arrival letter sent to all new students giving advice on choosing dictionaries
Statement from the March 2010 FD Newsletter which Susan Edwards suggests may be a useful way to introduce our students to the broad goals of ARW. I would add RCA as well.
How writing and the teaching of writing appear to be undergoing a major change.
"That change is spelled out clearly by the National Council of Teachers of English, which last year published “new literacies” for readers and writers in the 21st century. Among those literacies are the ability to “build relationships with others to pose and solve problems collaboratively and cross-culturally,” to “design and share information for global communities to meet a variety of purposes,” and to “create, critique, analyze, and evaluate multi-media texts.” Very little of that kind of work is possible to achieve without expanding the way we think about writing instruction in the context of online social tools."
Thought provoking article on teaching writing including some interesting exercises. Includes links back to parts 1 and 2
Recent changes in MLA style sheets -- no underlining book titles! No URLs for web sites! New publication medium requirements!
Is the ELP a model for the university of the future? We seem to fit some of the recommendations in this article. However, there are ideas here that would be good for us to consider as well.
-
Abolish permanent departments, even for undergraduate education, and create problem-focused programs

Tenure should be replaced with seven-year contracts, which, like the programs in which faculty teach, can be terminated or renewed. This policy would enable colleges and universities to reward researchers, scholars and teachers who continue to evolve and remain productive while also making room for young people with new ideas and skills.
A possible activity for ELP students. Note that Gdocs that are shared with collaborators can also be used in this way for annotation, but can be done as a group instead of just individuals.

As Frank Smith reminds us, “Ignorance is not so much not knowing an answer as not knowing that there is a question, not being able to think when thinking is required. Ignorance is a blind dependence that someone else will be able to tell you what to do.”5
This site provides a lot content potentially useful to teachers and students. Try going into "Subject Guides" and then search a topci like Race.
A good resource to help our students learn how to use the Web more effectively in getting sources for essays and research papers. This was shared by Ed McDaniel following a talk I had with him.
Interesting article about on-line tools for checking vocabulary levels of readings. Could be useful for our ELP Reader.
