      following is based on a confidential survey of 528 teens (1:1 males: females),
      ages 10-19 and grades 5-12, in Greenville County, South Carolina in September
      2005.


      • The
        average age of first-time tobacco use was 11.1 years old.

      • 45%
        used tobacco at least once in the past 30 days.

      • 22%
        used it in the past 30 days as often as several times a month, every week, or
        almost every day.

      • 19% did
        not believe trying or using tobacco “once or twice” was risky or harmful, while
        34% believed it was "very" risky or harmful.

      • 4% did
        not believe regular tobacco use was risky or harmful, while 65% believed it was
        "very" risky or harmful.

      • 26%
        said if they used tobacco regularly, their friends wouldn’t be upset, while 67%
        said their friends would be upset.

      • 10%
        said if they used tobacco regularly, their parents wouldn’t be upset, while 86%
        said their parents would be upset.

      • 27% of
        teens were “non-users”, while 73% were “users”.

      • 45%
        used tobacco in combination with other substances 30 days prior to the survey,
        while only 2% used only tobacco.

        used tobacco and marijuana 30 days prior to the survey.
